Weird problem......

This started happening to me about a month ago. My system will just freeze up out of the blue for no particular reason at when I try to launch certain programs randomly. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. Basically, my monitor will black out and go into standby mode and my hard disk light will be solidly lit for an indefinite amount of time. The only thing I can do is reboot. And here's the funny thing: the computer won't reboot unless you wait for about 10 minutes and try to.

At first I thought it might have been a heat problem, but this machine has been running since November '01 with absolutely ZERO problems up until about a month ago. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

(Omega II is the rig I'm having trouble with.)

Sounds like the Power supply is starting to freak out IMO. If you have access to another PSU, I'd try that first. After that, I'd try the video card.

Compudog outlines a good approach - I would add this. Go into Control Panel, Power management and make everything always on - no standby authorized. Standby and hibernation have a bad habit of going South and mucking things up.

Hmmm....but the really funny thing is that this has only been happening for about a month.

I tried swapping out the All-in-Wonder card that for an old TNT2 M64 I had lying around and I still seem to have the same problem. Maybe it is the PSU. That'll have to wait till tomorrow though, because I have no access to another one at the moment. The current PSU in this system (Antec 350W) is only about a year old, too.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I just switched out with a 430W Antec PSU and I'm still having this annoying problem. I'm starting to thing my Epox 8HKA+ mobo is starting to crap out on me.

I fixed the problem. It indeed ended up being the motherboard. I picked up an ASUS A7V8X even though I really couldn't afford it (I was starting to go crazy with my system being in pieces) and now I have no more problems.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.
