Weird problem

I'm building a computer for a friend, and being the cheap person that he is, he wanted me to reuse parts from a compaq computer he had prior to this. I'm using a hard drive (2.1 gigs - I know, you don't have to tell me how lame that is), a CD-ROM(unknown), and the floppy.
The other components are:

athlon 1.0 ghz
MSI K7T266 pro
Leadtek Geforce 2 ti
256 megs of ram

Problem is, when I put everything together and fired it up, it *still* won't recognize a boot disk (IE: invalid boot disk message) in either the cd rom or the floppy. I've double checked all of the slave/master jumpers, all of the plugs, everything - and can't find a reason why this isn't working. Could it be that the hard drive (it says it's a seagate hard drive) is OEM stuff and incompatible with the other components I've just bought?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
