I have a 19" sony trinitron from 1987, not sure what model. i brought it to college, hooked it up with cable for its first time, and it worked fine. but now there is a problem. a few days ago while watching TV, the audio/video would be lost and i'd get a jumbled gray screen (but not snow). if I changed the channel, everything would work fine again. then the next day changing the channel didn't fix anything. if i turned the TV off, and back on, everything would work again. then the next day, this was no longer a solution. now nothing i do can get TV again. i tried every control on the TV (not very many) and even cleaned the connector on the back of the TV.

i plugged someone else's TV in my room and it worked fine. i plugged my TV in someone else's room and it didn't work. so i don't understand what could have happened to my TV...over 3 days, it didn't move, nothing was spilled on it, and it got progressively worse till now I can't get any TV at all

There are cracks in the old solder connections on your tv's pcb, probably around connecting pins for a subsystem card. These open up when your tv gets hot, and then the tv fails. You can actually see them if you open up the tv and pull out the pcb.

DO NOT REPAIR THEM YOURSELF! You can get killed by the electricity in the back of the tv.

A good TV tech can fix this in a few minutes with the proper equipment. Cost to you: 75-100 bucks. Sorry, but it is time for you to get a new tv, since you can get a decent 13 inch model for that kinda money.

crap...well i guess the TV isn't entirely worthless because i can still play games on it. would it be safe for someone with an EE degree to repair the TV?
