My friend recently called me up and told me he had a problem with his HP computer.
Basically, he said he couldn't scandisk and defrag his computer. That and occasionally it would lock up and not boot up after rebooting. (It would boot the 2nd time he rebooted) Instantly blamed the hard drive. (I did too) Weird thing is he would switch molex connectors (he named them P4 and P5) and once he plugged in P5, the computer would work for a while, then go on the spritz. (Plugging in P4 would give him all sorts of problems) We both assume it's the HD, and he says he'll get a new one.
The next day he calls up again saying the computer won't boot up at all - just a blank screen. He gives the computer to me, I take it home, plug it in - blank screen. I try swapping IDE cables, changing the power connectors, making sure the hd was on the right pin settings, nothing. I then plug in a spare HD I have from a working Compaq and that does not boot up either. (I can hear the HD start up but after that it doesn't do anything) I get the same blank screen I do with the HP's HD. So now neither HD will work on the HP, so we're not sure (actually we're pretty sure now) it's not all the HP's HD that is going wack. (BTW, we can't remove the HP's HD because it has 4 screws - 2 on the front side, 2 on the back - I can't figure out how to gain access to the 2 on the back - or else I'd just plug the HP's HD into my computer as a secondary drive to test it)
Any suggestions as to what might possibly be the problem? Thanks!
