Weird problem... can't fix it! :(

Hi all,

I am running an ASUS A8N-E with a AMD64 3200+ 939 (Venice I think...) system. My video card is an ATI X800 XL, along with 1GB of RAM. I have a few USB devices but mostly they have an external power souce (powered hub). This is all powered by an Antec TruePower II 430w PSU.

Anyways... I have noticed that if I leave my system running and leave the house, when I come back it won't be responsive. I turned off all the power savings stuff, so it's not in suspend... I'm not sure exactly what happens, but the PC is running, but the screen is blank and nothing is responsive. I can't replicate the problem, and I'm not sure what it might be. I thought it might be power, but I can play games and stuff and it doesn't crap out at load -- well it does sometimes, but I play for a good while quite often before it does. However, this mostly happens at IDLE, because I usually walk away from my PC for an hour or two or whatever -- and nothing is running in the background other than like, antivirus.

Anyways, I am wondering if anybody has any ideas to my problem. I'm still trying to figure it out :( Maybe it's a simple BIOS setting that I missed.... I don't know :(

Please help! Thanks!

Do you have a Marvel ethernet device on your motherboard?

I started having the exact same problem after I updated my motherboard's ethernet driver from windows update, but the problem went away after I rolled the driver back.

Okay, here's the deal... apparently it's only my video card. It just shorts out, but I still have sound going and everything else. The temps aren't too high -- I checked that already.

One thing that's weird is about my video card. It's a Connect3D X800 XL card. In the manual it says to hook up the PCI-E power cord to the card -- but on the card there isn't any place for that cord. So my video dies out but the computer keeps on chugging.

Any ideas? I tried calling Connect3D but their tech support number is just a number to ATI.

Thanks!

Yea, using RivaTuner, the GPU temp is 38. The fan is spinnin on the card, so I dunno :(

Seriously, did you get the newest drivers for your ethernet off windows update?
I had the exact same problem with those drivers, which was fixed after I rolled the driver back. Several Asus motherboards which use the same ethernet chip are having issues with these drivers.

No, I didn't use a newer driver. I still can't think of why this is happening :(

Hmmm what kind of display? Sounds similar to a problem I had with my dell 2001FP where it would not come back from standby mode. It's a common known problem with the 2001FPs.

Yea, the 2001FP is my display. However, my old PC didn't have this problem at all.... and my computer doesn't go into standby. I can be playing a game or surfing the web and boom, it just up and dies.

I am really confused :(

I'm thinking it might be your 2001FP.

Read CAG's post near the bottom.

Some of the 2001FP's suffer from a powersave/standby mode issue...right after the computer boots up, the LCD goes into powersave/standby mode and won't come out unless you turn off the computer at the on/off switch and boot it back up. It'll do this maybe 1 out of 10 times you start the machine up. It happens to Dell's and other mfg's panels and the higher end ATi cards and, although no one seems to know why it happens, checking on the two DVi buttons that arogan mentioned in the ATi control panel cures it. I had the problem with my 2001FP and kept the 2 DVI buttons checked and didn't have a problem. The significance of arogan's post is that you can now do this in the CCC. So, those of us with this problem, can now use the CCC and not have to worry about the problem
