My new IBM 120GXP hard drive blue screened me the other day. This is the weirdest problem i've ever had, because the blue screen will not even stay up for long enough for me to read it. It reboots immediately after the blue screen shows up. From seeing it a bunch of times, i saw words such as "registry" and "physical memory"...but I couldn't see much else. I tried to boot in Safe-Mode...but that option doesn't work either. Nor could I boot from CD to try to repair whatever was left of my C Partition. I plugged in the hard drive as Slave and I was able to fully view the contents of the two partitions on the hard drive. Can anybody help me figure what is wrong? Sorry for the long post, thank you in advance.

First, you must be running XP or 2K. There is a setting that makes the OS reboot automatically when it bluescreens. That is the first thing I turn off when I load the OS. I learned the hard way like you :)

Secondly, why do you seem to blame the HDD out of hand? It sounds like your registry is corrupted. Many things could cause that. You might want to see if you can read anymore of the error message to pull a number off of it.

Excatally... To change the setting in XP go to Control Panel, System, Advanced Tab, Startup and Recovery Settings, and then de-select Automatically Restart.

That should keep the blue screen up there for you to read and curse at. :)

THanks for the post. I'm not blaming the hard drive, it worked fine for about a week ;).

How do I turn off this stupid blue screen reboot feature? The reboots way too fast for me to see anything. [EDIT: thanks aphexII]

Right now I'm ready to just install a new version of Win2K on my C drive, but for some reason I cannot boot from the CD. I can't even boot in Safe Mode, which really confuses me. :(

Damn...how do I get into Control Panel if I can't boot into the C Partition. I currently have the hard drive as a slave, which means I can only access the Control Panel of my backup hard drive.

You may just have to reinstall.

Would that be too hard? You siad you can access the drive as slave. That way you can save your files.

Last time that happened to me, I just reinstalled. My problem was this:

Stop: 0xc0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SYSTEM or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Read about it here

Luckily it was a new install of XP and no files were on it yet. It never happened again and I think it was due to a memory failure. I was trying some pretty high overclocks at the time.

How can I reinstall if I can't boot from CD? That's the only way I've ever installed Win2K. I'm kinda curious to know why my safe-mode or boot from CD options are not working. Could it be that a virus f*cked my BIOS in some way?

To boot from the CD, you have to set it as the first boot device in the BIOS. Then a message will pop up asking you to hit any key to boot from CD and will time out in a few seconds... IF a bootable CD is in the drive.

I don't know if you know this, but I thought I'd tell ya :)

Hehe...thanks AmusedOne. I actually did know this. I've set my BIOS settings to boot from CD. I actually set all three of them to boot from CD because I was getting pissed at it not being able to boot from CD. What happens is that the promt does appear to boot from cd and press any key to begin. As soon as I do press a key, it ignores the boot from CD and goes directly to starting up Windows and then the infamous blue screen. I tried using two different Win2K CDs and I still get that crap. Any ideas?

Nope. Now I'm stumped :( How about trying it with no HDD installed just to see if it works?

Or maybe clear your BIOS, and then try it?

How do I clear my BIOS, and what does clearing the BIOS exactly do? I'm also stumped why I can't even attempt to boot into Safe-Mode. Isn't F8 the keyboard command do bring up this option?

Yes. But the timing is tricky. I always just tapped the hell out of F8 to get it to work.

Check your mobo's documentation on where the jumper is to reset the BIOS. If all else fails, unplug it and remove the battery.

Like I said, I'm stumped. I've never had a problem with not being able to boot from CD, except once with an ABIT dual PIII VIA chipset board (VP6). That one required a funky setting in the BIOS that I discovered on a techhelp site.

clear your bios by consulting your mobo manual and look up "cmos reset". You basically move a jumper and that resets your cmos battery which clears your bios. Clearing your bios brings you back to factory spec, most likely weeding out them bugs and getting a brand new bios.

My motherboard manual??!! :Q

The hardest task of all would be trying to find it. ;)

Damn I still want to figure out what is causing all this craziness concerning Safe-Mode and Boot from CD. :disgust::eek:

If all else fails, I'm sure you can find the info online at the mobo maker's website.
