Weird occurance

So I want to make sure a maxtor drive I have is dead. I plug it into my computer as a slave. When I start up my computer around when it tried to start booting it would lock up and I wouldn't beable to use my keyboard. If I tried going into bios it would get there and lock up before I could do anything in it; no keyboard use once again. So I unplug the drive restart; I still got all the problems. So I clear cmos and the computer starts working fine again. Should I assume the drive is dead or was this some weird occurance (clearing cmos is a pain I don't want to try again)?

A faulty HDD shouldn't cause your system to lock up while in the bios, because you're not accessing the drives at all yet. I suppose it could've been a faulty driver on the HDD maybe. Have you tried putting the drive back in to see if it works now? Just doesn't seem like it would cause it to freeze in the bios.

i'm not sure it would cause the problems you describe, but did you doublecheck both sets of jumpers ? or maybe set both to cable select ?
