Windows left that blasted turn signal on again! Your computer is riding its turn signal! :D

Seriously, your hard disk is probably about to take a dump. I'd back up all essential data and contact the manufacturer of the disk.

well, that noise will occur when your drive is switches between platters, I.E. a 60 GB drive, may be made out of 4 platters stacked on top of each other each 15GB. its possible that your drive is just switching between platters, depending on how frequently it occurs.

Most drive manufactures give you a tool to check the status of your drive, the IBM drive fitness test is one such tool, for ibm of course.

I've owned a quantum brand drive that clicked like that a ton, and it was fine, then again, I had a compaq at work start doing that and 2 weeks later the hard drive was dead.

Backup now just in case, run the tests, see what happens. Also, there are a lot of hard drive tools for windows that can analyze SMART data, IBM also has a nice one of those, which i beleive works on any hard drive, that will report any errors, potential failures, etc....

if you have a maxtor, you better back that stuff up very fast. Every maxtor I've owned starts making that sound about a week before the thing throws a rod (or whatever the HD equivalent is). You'll know when you're f*cked when the thing refuses to boot and sounds like a lawnmower.

since its a Western Digital, i would suggest going ahead and smashing it with a hammer. that way, you'll know right when it will fail instead of it failing at the worst possible second like very WD drive i've rever owned. ;)

western digital has 'Data Lifeguard tools' that will check your disk for problems.

if you didn't get this floppy with your drive, you can download it here, at the WD website

The downloaded application will instruct you to insert a blank floppy and make the bootable ez install diskette. then you boot your machine on that
floppy and follow the directions to check out the drive. Nothin' to it
