Is there any reason except preference that so many people choose goofy names in online games? I can never remember any of these crazy names with lots of non-letter characters.

I blame lazyness. They try 5 or 6 normal names then get tired of seeing "name in use please try again" and just randomly select something.

However, for games that don't have this issue.... well then those people are idiots.

Exactly, it can often be because all the normal words are used up already. My name originally came from pounding the keyboard on the Westwood Online registration (during the RA multiplayer beta test in '97) after trying 10 or so things that were taken up. Most games now allow multiple players with the same name, but I have stuck with this one on various forums since everyone still recognizes me by this. :p Although I switched to something else in games some years ago.

I chose my gaming tag out of frustration also and it has just stuck. I would change it on Xbox live but I am not spending 800 MS points just to change my tag... it works for me :)

My guess is randomly pounding on keyboards... as stupid as it sounds it is true.

I got my name back when I played Earth and Beyond in like 2003. Couldn't think of anything so I just added an x to my first name. It works, and sadly this is now my nickname haha. Even people who aren't into computers call me this just because they hear other people.

I had a friend who always used Qwerty Uiop for his user name. This was back in the 80s when the online world was very small indeed.

This all began when quakeworld was released and it introduced the ability to insert characters like arrows and other dumb stuff. If you remember deathrow (with thresh and b2) their tag name was DROW->(weird arrow thingie) and their name.
