here is the setup -> K7N2 Delta-ILSR, AMD Barton 2500, XP Pro w/ all updates except 811493, 1GB pc3200 DDR ram, 2 sata drives in striping raid. antec 450W P/S. the probelm is the computer reboots periodically, not when it is being stressed, but sometimes when i am checking email. the computer is fast, but not reliable. any ideas??

Why don't you have that one update installed? Try the computer on a different power circuit or surge protector to rule out flaky power coming out of the wall.

i have read many time that it causes performance problems. this computer has been in 2 different houses, so i don't think it is the power, plus i just removed a computer from where it is now plugged in. thanks for the thought...

What kind of RAM, 1 stick or 2 sticks of RAM to make 1GB?

Did this just occur or new built system?

new built system, 2 sticks, but i can't remember what type of ram, i am running stock memory setting and have run memtest for 12 hours without a problem

Check for updated BIOS and NForce drivers. Also try using a lower CAS(2.5 or 3.0) setting for your ram in BIOS.

Those are symptoms of the Blaster Virus. Are you using any antivirus software with the latest definitions?

i reinstalled windows without any connection to the lan, then installed sp1a and norton 2k3, then went online and to get updated virus defs and then ran a complete scan, although nothing had been installed or email opened. that is just the way i do things.

IMHO: its the board. MSI for my experience is hit or miss. I know other members won't even touch them. good luck.

i am kind of starting to believe this. i have tried ide drives also with the same result...

i exchange the m/b for a completely unopened unit and replaced the ram with a kingston 1GB kit (matched pair), still rebooting.... 🙁

I am one of those members, after being had a few times I will never buy an other MSi product ever again.

Looks like you should have picked the Asus. 🙁

Have both Power connectors(ATX and 4pin 12v) plugged in? Is there a cd drive or other piece of metal touching the motherboard?

Blaster does not wait for use to hit. This is not a Blaster problem. No one has suggested you test your RAM, so I will: Test your RAM. Hit up memtest and run a few passes. Or one of the other RAM testors available. I have this board, and I love it. Rock stable and pretty fast (all stock speeds) for me. I have had zero problems. To me this sounds like flaky RAM. Also, now that I think about it, check this thread over at nForcersHQ.com, it has extensive posting by users of RAM that MSI nForce boards don't play well with. My 1GB (2x512) of Corsair RAM is great.

i have tested the ram for 1+days with memtest and it came out ok, and i have had the 4 pin connector connected and disconnected....

hmmmm. I dunno. Maybe try one stick of RAM at a time? Sometimes memtest misses things. Tto wit: I had a problem with crashing, I did a memtest for 10 hours and it found nothing. Removed a stick of RAM and no crashes for weeks. Otherwise maybe a bad PSU? Did you see if your RAM doesnt play well with the board @nForcersHQ? I guess it could be both boards you got are bad...

on sunday or monday, i am going to put another psu in the box. if that doesn't fix, i will exchange the board for an asus a7n8x. thanks for all the help.

the ram doesn't particularily sitck out as bad at the HQ, kingston was good and exchanged my old ram, which wasn't the matched pair kit with this one.

i have a biostar nforce 2 ultra board that is rock solid, i mean rock... i really like the msi board, but will probably like the asus too 🙂

thanks again for the help...

That sounds like a good call, replace the power supply. Since you replaced the memory and board I would rule those 2 out, they are not the problem. Let us know what happens. The saga continues....

I had an MSI KT3 Ultra 2 that would all the sudden just freeze by opening e mail or running AIM for little bit. It turned out the motherboard no longer liked the FSB at 166 it was stable up to like 163 or something though. I know it was the motherboard because switching to an A7N8X DLX fixed the problem. I had had the system about a year and then it started pulling that crap on me grrr. oh well it got me an upgrade hehe =) I'll never buy an MSI again though MSI said that they would replace the motherboard.
