Weird msg with USB device

I hooked up a multi-function printer via USB. Everything is working great - except that if the printer is on when I turn on the computer, I get an Eject/Unplug Device icon after boot-up. I don't get the icon if the printer is off on bootup, and I turn it on afterwards. I called HP tech support, and the tech didn't know why I'm getting the icon.

I'm running Win2k, Abit Kt7 mobo.

Does anyone know what's causing this?

You are supposed to get it for any removable devices. It is even supposed to pop up when you hot plug it. If you have several USB or Firewire divices, you will always have that icon. It is there for a reason. You are supposed to use it to shut or remove the device. It is part of W2K, XP and also was in ME.

Corky-g, thanks for the reply. Guess you can tell this is the first time I've hooked a usb device. 😱

You'd think HP tech support should've known this, but at least I know what it is now.

I never bothered with usb peripherals before, but I'm hooked now. Just picked up a Logitech optical wheel mouse to replace my serial mouse. 😉
