Weird Mashed Potato question

So, my father in law seems to like to exagerate things and tell stories. He's trying to tell me that Americans don't have mashed potatoes, I called shenanigans on him, and so I figured I'd come to my wonderful source of all trivial knowledge. Do you americans ever eat mashed potatoes?

my father in law frustrates me to no end sometimes w/ his stories. He's only ever been about 50 miles into North Dakota, and he seems to extrapolate his views of that tiny corner of your country to the rest of the thing. And he seems to believe it w/ such conviction that i want to smack him upside the head.

that's what i had told him, that mashed potatoes were an irish thing, which is why canada probably had them in the first place.... and why the US would surely have them too.

Just show him the menu of a US restaurant like Applebee's or Outback Steakhouse. Most restaurant chains have their menus on their websites.

I just ate some mashed potatoes tonight. There are very few differences between American and Canadian culture. Basically, Canucks say "eh" and Americans don't.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those. And aero bars, coffee crisp and the like. I personally prefer M&Ms over Canadian Smarties. American Smarties are just sugar pills.

If he's been in ND he should know that we have some form of potatoes with pretty much every meal. And we eat a LOT of mashed potatoes.

This mashed potatoes thing really strikes me as funny since one time when I was in Canada, there was a show on where some Canadians went down to Florida and asked Americans really stupid question to prove American ignorance. My favorite question was "Since Canada is landlocked, should we let them use our ports for their Navy?"

There are a lot of interesting variations including:
Smooth
Chuncky
With skins
Without skins


I like the chuncky, without skins and with a little butter and milk blended in.
