Weird login logoff infinite loop in WinXP

When i turn the computer on it will go all the way to login, then it will log off, save settings, then try to login again only to log off. I have set the computer to automatically login where it has been doing fine for a year, nothing has been changed. Trying last good config made it even worst, after loading windows a get a screen full of colors, like a bad VGA card. Going to safemode gives the same login log off loop. Anyone know what could cause this?

there is an easy fix to this. I just can't remember it.... I remember it's a pain the arse to search for cause you get a lot of random stuff.

Too bad I'm not at work or I could grab our "Bible" of fixes and look it up.

Are you on a domain? If so, check your date/time in bios to make sure it is the same as that on the time server.

Actually, I just noticed you autologin, so this probably isn't the case.

BLAM... can't believe I found it

hi
this is a common problem when ur userint file gets corrupts.
just try these steps
Go in recovery console using windows xp CD

You will be in C:\windows
type 'cd system32'
the directory should now be C:\windows\system32
type 'copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe'
Take out the cd and type exit at recovery console and restart the computer

Startup your computer and login using your username
Start < Run < Regedit
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and change
Userinit to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,"
"
I've used this before it works everytime...
