Weird Laptop Problem - Keeps turning off

Im having a strange problem. I just replaced a HD in a Dell Inspiron 8200, and now it shuts off randomly. Just powers down without any warning. No BSOD, no dump, nothing.

It happens sometimes while in Windows, sometimes while booting windows, sometimes right during POST!!!

I am at a loss. Any ideas?

Update: I have eliminated memory as the problem... Tried a stick from another laptop and same problem. Turned off right during POST

I have a problem with most laptops if the fan is not exposed. Is it doing it when it is in a game or sitting on cloth? Try leaving it on a regular table and see if it happens. When they get to a certain temp they just shut off no warning.

It is on a glass table.. fan vents are clearly open... so you think its heat related?

lappie was working fine before the old HD crapped out

Its possible, I have had driver conflicts do the same thing also. Since it is crapping at POST, it is most likely hardware related. Is there any way you can check to see if the fan is actually turning on?

Not really, not without opening the whole thing.

Weird thing is, at the moment I had been running the laptop for over an hour with no problems.

Then, right when I started Windows Update, it crapped out like always. Attempted to turn it back on and it powered on and then right off again right after checking for a boot cd.

Waited 5 minutes, then turned it on again, and now it seems fine again.

This is the general case once it powers off, if I wait a few minutes, I can successfully boot.

Could it have something to do with me replacing the hard drive? I dont really think it does.

Doesnt sound like it. My best guess is either a heat related issue (the fan stopped working) or something is flaky with the mobo.

I personally would try using it without the AC adapter and if it craps out, try it without the battery.
