Hey all.

I've had this problem for a while, but I can't seem to fix it.

In order for my keyboard to function in Windows XP *or* linux, I have to have another keyboard plugged into the mouse PS/2 port, and I have to hold down/tap a button on the main keyboard.

Otherwise I can't use it in Windows, and Linux will reboot.

The only thing I can think of that my PSU was burned a bit by my Tyan Tiger MP when it died. The 5V connectors are burnt, but it still works. Since the PS/2 port uses +5V, I'm thinking that might be it. I'm using a Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW+ now.

*Any* ideas at all?

Thanks.

You have a keyboard plugged into the mouse port? Why? I have a system that runs both Mandrake 9.1 and Win 2000; a single keyboard plugged into the keyboard PS/2 port works fine...

Because if I don't I can't use the main keyboard ever. This way I can if I push a bunch of buttons on the main keyboard at startup. It works in the BIOS, it's only when a non-DOS OS loads up.

Yes, on the Tyan Tiger. Never tried it before burn on the Gigabyte. Also worked after burn on the Tiger, until the Tiger just died. That could have been the death blow for the 5V line.

one other thing, could the keyboard have got hurt when the Tyan Tiger died? Have you tried another keyboard in the Keyboard PS2 port? Does it do the same thing?

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I've tried another keyboard. Still no dice. I have one more that I can try, but since two don't work, I'm not all that hopeful.

Thanks!

Are there any other problems with the 5V line? (ie, if you hook something up internally, any problems?) Have you tried stripping things down in your computer (ie, HDD, video, CPU, RAM) and using it like that to see if perhaps you lessen the power load it works? Any extra power supplies you can try?

I haven't seen any other symptoms. The only stripping down I can do is to take out the CD-ROM drives and the SCSI card. I've done that, same problem. I have an older PCP&C PSU I can try, but I don't think it's powerful enough.

I did just reboot (I put in an extra 512MB I just got back from RMA) and it worked OK. I don't know if it was just luck, but at least it was a good sign. Thanks for the reply!

This is indeed strange. I would try a new PSU to see if it clears up the problem. If not, might be the mobo, hopefully just the PSU though!

Well, it's not the PSU. I just tried the 350W.

I also tried moving the motherboard out of the case and it's not some kind of weird short.

I'm using modded XP processors instead of MPs, could that have any effect?

I think I've determined that it only happens when I boot an SMP aware OS. It doesn't happen with DOS or the stock Linux kernel on the Debian 2.2r1 CDs.

Any thoughts?

I've got this very same problem with my MicroShaft Pro Multimedia USB keyboard and mouse. If I don't have a PS2 keyboard plugged in then I get "no worky" at startup and I have to hit the reset button. Plug in a PS2 keyboard and it works fine on reboot. At any point after that I can remove the PS2 keyboard and the USB keyboard and mouse work just fine. Until I forget and reboot again...

This is on WinXP SP1, Athlon 2400 and Via KT4 Ultra 400 M/B. Pisses me off.

So I sent the board back for RMA and it still has the same problem!

It's got to be a BIOS or board problem because it worked fine with my BP6 and S2460.
