Weird issue with Word and Excel(Office XP)

One the desktops at work is running Windows 2K SP4 and Office XP SP2 with all updates. In both Word and Excel, graphics embedded in a document are not visible except for a black border. I'll try and get a screenshot up tomorrow, but any ideas in the meantime?

I have the same problem in one of the classes I teach at WOU (at least in Word). When my students work through a particular set of exercises about half of them get black box of doom (as I like to call it). I can't for the life of me replicate it on any of my systems at home and I swear it seems to follow certain users around. Interestingly, if they copy and paste the clip art instead of inserting it as you normally would it seems to work every time. I've searched all the places I know of to go for Office help and have come up empty. I hope you have better luck.
