Friend of mine just had this start happening today...

Goes into IE... Types a web address in the address bar, hits enter, and bam, Firefox pops up and goes to the address.

He just uninstalled Firefox, now when he types a web address in IE, it pops up and error and says 'Application not found'

Any ideas?

He set IE to the default browser, but still no luck. He's running spyware removal programs as we speak.

If his antivirus is feeble or old stuff, then have him try what I wrote up in this text file. He may also want to re-register IE as the correct program for opening filetype "URL," by logging on with an Administrator-class account, opening My Computer, clicking Tools > Folder Options, going to the File Type tab, and finding URL Internet Shortcut on the list. That's just a shot in the dark, but hey :)

He's running AVG, updated, scanned, nothing showing.

URL: Internet Shortcut shows; Shell Doc Object and Control

Same thing my laptop shows... :(

See if he'd be interested in running my command-line McAfee scan overnight. It's not unusual for it to find stuff that AVG didn't find. Is his anti-spyware scanning turning up anything significant?
