Weird Ice

This is on top of a 10' x 30" above ground pool. I leave it up all year because we only get a few days of cold weather at a time like we did last week.

Today I noticed this and haven't see it in previous years. Nor is it on my smaller garden ponds.


On top, it looks like a bunch of hexagons jammed together. Each block is almost 3" thick. Tapping, or even just squeezing it with your hand makes it shatter into cylindrical tube like things.

There's probably someone here that could say why that happened. @IronWing might have some insight. The cause could be extrapolated from similar formations made in rock.

or try searching yourself. Lookup "giants causeway". Might give you some clues.
 
I recall seeing something similar on the lake, but it was in spring while the ice was melting. The ice turned into what I can basically describe as vertical icicles floating, it was the weirdest thing. At one point all of it started to shift towards the shore and it made a really interesting crystal like sound.
