Weird home lan issues

Had 3 systems running configured as follows ,linksys 1 port router with linksys 4 port switch connecting 2nd and 3rd floor systems with ICS and crossover cable to 3rd system on 3rd floor,RCA cable modem, comcast as ISP.Everything was ducky.Upgraded main system on second floor to winXP,again everything just ducky,2 days after the upgrade boom,no internet, powercycle everything, connection returns,a few hours later boom down again only this time I'm getting diag led red flash of router death(even trying recovery methods won't bring it back) ok,picked up a new linksys 4 port router/switch the computers on the 3rd floor are working beautifly now. However on the main system the web is sluggish as hell with page timeouts and won't even fully load the admin page for the new router. The nic in this system is a netgear fas11,I've got a green light,I've rolledback and reinstalled drivers, changed etc still sluggish.

Here's my question ordinarily I'd figure I just had bad luck and the nic went south suddenly along with the router and I'd swap in a new one and clone the old mac addie to troubleshoot but the death of 2 solid pieces of hardware in a few hours makes me wonder if something else might be going on here.I'm ruling out the modem for now even though I think the RCA are POS's because the other 2 rigs are getting great internet connection speeds.

Any thoughts ? this has been keeping me awake for like 2 nights now and I'd appreciate any help in ruling out weirdness that might be killing hardware.

What in the world are you doing with ICS and a broadband router? 😕 I can't imagine how this is lashed up!

the systems are on two separate floors, one computer on the second floor and two on the third, due to strutural situations we could only drop one cable down to the second floor,so one 3rd floor computer
is connected via the router on the second floor, the other computer on the 3rd floor is connected via crossover cable and a separate nic to the first 3rd floor computer.

I guess I don't know why you just didn't use a $15 switch or hub to split the lines, instead of forcing the computer to forward the packets. It would be soooooo much cleaner. 🙂

I recently moved and needed a solution ASAP with the hardware and physical struture configuration I had on hand,I will be putting a switch upstairs shortly.

Well, the only thing I can think of, to address the dying hardware issue, is an electrical grounding issue in your wiring. If you have sufficient common mode voltage between the chassis of the various computers, that could be enough to take out the Ethernet ports. You might start by making sure you have proper grounds on all of the outlets.
