Weird Font Problem in Windows

I think this might belong here, since i think it is a video card problem but if not please lock.

After anywhere from a cple minutes to a cple days, the fonts on most programs in windows98 start getting weird(like showing up in bold, and icons disappear in programs also other things happen such as when i try to open a new window in ie or netscape- i get weird errors(cant remember what it is though)

My setup is as follows: TBird 1 gig
asus a7v
256 meg mushkin
88 gigs of hdisk space win98 se
nvidia geforce 2 gts

How many fonts are in your c:\windows\fonts folder? Win95/98 can only reliably handle about 150 or so before things start to get weird...

If you don't find an answer here, you might try posting this in "Video" or "Technical support.":Q

Have you got the latest video drivers installed?

The machine itself is very stable.

Dunno where that blatant piece of misinformation came from...I currently have 411 fonts in my folder and there have been no problems. Actually, they came with my old Packard bell 133 mhz 4.5 yrs ago, and I've never had a problem.

As for the original topic, it might be a GDI error, especially if you have a lot of windows open when this happens. Run Resource Meter (win95/98, probably in 2k and ME, but I dunno), and when the bar gets low (red and below, that means too many windows are open, wasting Windows' GDI resources, and causing display probs similar to what you've mentioned.

Well i have like 20 windows open and have 1% resources free also i noticed the following:

I am currently dual booting win2k and win98 and there is a partition that is viewable under win2k with data- but it shows up as a differnt drive letter under win98 and is listed as using "ms dos compatibiltity mode" is there a way to fix this problem?

Could this cause the problem and if so how do i fix it?

That's your problem right there. I'm surprised you managed to open another window without Windows imploding in on itself.

Install the drivers for your motherboard (I'm assuming it's an IDE drive), and the problem should resolve.

One significant digit makes a lot of difference. You'd be confused if someone told you WW2 took place in 194 AD and that most ATMs charge over $20.00 per use, wouldn't you :p

[edit]btw, thanks for the info. I honestly didn't know about the font limitation :)[/edit]

That sort of stuff happens to me all the time, it seems to be vaguely related to someone playing a game that require a change in the video settings. I have come to accept it as I do all the other Windows shortcomings.

I noticed(when I was running 98 NOT 98se) that things like this happened. I was told that it was a bug w/ the origional win98. which version are you using?
