hi. I have a file in my documents that is hidden and I cannot delete it.
It is 0 byts.. does not have any file type and has no dates for when it was last accessed, modified or created. when i try to delete the file, it says 'cannot delete file: cannot read from source file or disk"

the file name is CATW4V9H.

does anyone know what this file is and how i can get rid of it?
i have no viruses etc and a full up-to-date system running xp pro and NTFS. The file is not on the same partition as windows

any help appreciated thanks

Have you tried CHKDSK? I doubt that attempting to delete it in safe mode would work any better, but if you haven't tried that...

Yep, sounds like a corrupted MFT entry. Chkdsk should resolve it.

ok thanks for all the replys
I wasnt too sure how to use chkdsk but I ran chkdsk in command on the drive that has the file
After doing this, I am still unable to delete the file
When i try to make the file readonly etc, it comes up saying it cannot find the file.
This is really annoying me because my backup program is picking it up as an error and not successfully completing the backup

Any more help would be appreciated

thanks

Weird... Try chkdsk once more, but make sure your using the /f and /r flags (e.g. chkdsk d: /f /f). That will make sure fixes are comitted and check the drive for bad sectors...
