When my computer boots up it says: Primary IDE chaneel no 80 conductor cable installed. This is before windows loads after it has done the memory check and the drive check. Anyone know what this means?

Did this problem just happen without you making any hardware/software changes?

try jumping into the BIOS and see if it detects it in there.

I think it started after installing my new HD I got yeserday its an 80 gig Maxtor drive. Thing is the drive works fine except for some weird humming noise (kinda sounds like a modem connecting- if anyone knows about this problem please let me know also) I did notice there was a small tear in the middle of the ide cable I'd assume it wouldn't work at all if that was the case, but the drives are both working. Anyways usually I just have the computer set to quickboot so it skips all that info but this time I turned it on to let it test everything.

i've seen this problem twice before... once when I hooked up an ata/100 hard drive to an ata/100 controller using an ata/33 cable, and also same scenario except on an ata/66 controller. make sure you're using the correct cable and this should take care of it

So what type of connector do I need? I assume I have a ATA 100 cause one of the ends is blue? My orignal 30 gig WD worked fine with no error message, but the 80 is giving the message, do some cables support the 80 and the 30? Or am I going to have the live with that message? Thanks for the help.
