Weird encoding issues - crickets sound

I captured a VHS with a pinnacle bungee which produces mpg files. I had to cut it to the size in virtualdub. It would not let me do a direct stream copy as it was mpeg going to avi, so I decided to just go uncompressed. Now the video has a crickets sound to it along with the original audio. I then tried to use divx, same thing. I did two of these, the first one worked, the second one (about 12 hours, since I went to bed while it captured) did not. If I listen to the actual mpg it's ok. What would cause sound to actually get added to the video? Is there maybe another program then virtualdub I can use to cut it?

Original:

Audio: MPEG Audio 44100Hz stereo 192Kbps [Mpeg-1]
Video: MPEG2 Video 480x480 (4:3) 29.97fps 2500Kbps [Video]

Converted:

Audio: PCM 44100Hz stereo 1411Kbps [Audio 1]
Video: DivX 5 480x480 29.97fps 780Kbps [Video 0]

What's also weird is the original's actual size is NOT 480*480 but is 640*480 but the converted is 480*480. But my dvd burn software should hopefully fix that and just "stetch" it to fit the 4:3 hopefully.

I'll check in vdub to see if I can force the sample rate to match. That might be the issue.

When I import I also get an error about anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp but it works anyway, though that might mean something.

I have no idea, that's what the default was. I just overrided it to 44100 and rendered but it still does the cricket sound. The sound it's supose to be is there, it's just that the cricket sound is added on.

Is there a way to make mpeg with virtualdub? Maybe it has to do with going from mpeg to avi.
