Weird CRT Monitor Problem

My friend recently bought a 17" LG Flatron monitor(CRT). At first I noticed that near the WinXP's "Start" button there was a purple-lish shade. I thought if I use the "Degauss" option on the monitor's OSD it would go off. But it didn't.

Now, to the weird part. I accidentally turned the monitor a bit and noticed that the purple-lish shade change a bit. Then, I started turning the monitor all around found that all sorts of different shades start to appear on various spots of the screen. At a certain direction the monitor's weird distortion appeared to be at it's max.....this time the windows destop even appeared to have moved down horizontally(you know like during the OSD's Vertical/Horizontal adjustment). Anyways...after moving it around a few times I noticed that at one particular direction there was no distortion whatever. The monitor appeared normal in that one direction/orientation/angle.

I even turned off the speakers and moved them away from the monitor. The monitor still showed these weird shades when placed at a different spot of the room(around 5 metres away from the original spot) but appears to become normal when I again orient it in the same direction as the earlier one which managed to remove the distortion.

Can someone explain what is wrong with this monitor? Has it got anything to do with the background EMF radiation?

there gotta be some wiring running around. inside the wall? tv, magnets, etc??? start taking things away from your monitor to pinpoint the problem.

What you are seeing is the affect of the Earth?s magnetic fields influencing your monitor. Monitors are very prone to magnetic influences even the earth?s natural magnetic field will have an influence on the monitors geometric distortion and color purity. This is normal, take any color monitor and rotate it 90 degrees and most will show some amount of color purity problems. Usually a simple hit of the degauss button clears it up.

Aren't monitors supposed to be shielded from a weak magnetic field such as the earth's. Or is it got something to do with LG monitors' poor product QA? Would it be recommendable to change for a different monitor? Or is it that my friend's room is the cause and no matter what all monitors are going to have the same problem in his room?

No, you cannot shield a monitor from magnetic fields unless you cover the front glass, where the fields come in. Covering the front glass would defeat the purpose of the monitor now wouldnt it.
