Weird computer temp readings

I just bought a new side case fan since my old one was dying (I could feel the low output of air) just a week ago. My CPU was running at 40-42 C on idle and about 47-48C on load with the new fan, which was a noticeable improvement.

But recently the weather up here just got cooler because of a cold front (at least 15-20 degrees cooler during the day and night) causing a major temperatue drop. So in theory my computer should run either at the same or a lower temperature. But my idle temp just shot up to 46-47C and 55-57C on load.

Is it possible for the ambient temperature to decrease but have the CPU temps to increase? Or does define all logic and science?

Yes, something very weird is happening with your system.

Here are the things you would expect to happen with a 15C drop in ambient.

Both the motherboard and CPU temps would drop the same amount, and further, the spread between idle and load temperatures would be the same, but at the new level reflected by the change in ambient.

However, there are some caveats. If you are using a heatpipe cooler on the CPU, it is very likely that the cooler operates more efficiently in one temperature range than it does in another. But this should not affect the motherboard temperature's equilibrium at the new and lower ambient, and there should still be a fairly linear relationship between the ambient change and the change in idle and load temperatures.

Is your CPU fan temperature controlled, so that a lower case temperature will cause the fan to spin at a lower speed? There would also be other things to check, such as a build-up of cruft on intake fan filters.

The only other possibility is some flaw in the computer temperature sensors, but I have never seen anything like this. I'm in southern California, and we try to save on the electric bill before switching on the household AC, so that the room ambient can rise to 80F during the summer. In the colder months, the room temperature can drop to 64F. That's about a change of just short of 9C, or about half the change in ambient you've experienced. But with that change, everything I've explained above seems to follow. The average CPU temperature of about 38C will drop to about 29C.

Maybe someone else has some suggestions, but -- yes -- very weird indeed.

My ambient temps are between 21C and 28C and my mobo, cpu, gpu and hdds reflect the change too. If the ambient is less, everything else is less.
Maybe a gremlin is up and about. We got them here, but we call them, menehunes.
