After a *click* inside my computer, my screen does this: http://img203.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img203&image=p21326748lu.jpg
Happens when there isn't a lot CPU activity, never happens when I'm playing a game. There is an audiable *click*, I can hear fan stop and then start and then that happens. Started about a week ago and seems to happen more often now. I haven't changed any hardware/software drivers recently.

Specs: AMD64 3000+, K8VSE Deluxe, R9800Pro 128mb, 1gig ddr Kingston, 350W PSU.

Please help!

Gunz,

Also Welcome!

What fan is it that stops & starts? Have you checked?
Also what brand / model power supply are you using?

I had a similar type of visual problem with my 8mb Matrox video card.. it would work for random periods of time, it would bring up many vertical green or pink lines rendering the display pretty much useless. A reboot would go back to normal before it would eventually happen again.

Sure enough, the card never worked ever again after trying to install it in another machine, so it was the card in my case...

I have some sort of el-cheapo "Codegen" PSU. The fan that restarts seems to be the case fan since it's the loudest. The machine wouldn't even boot up at one point, the case fan just kept reving up as if there wasn't enough juice so I disconnected it. The computer boots now but the problem still happens. Could it be the PSU? It is rather old, older than all of the other components. The fan on it still works though.

Definitely get a new, high quality power supply.
Alot of people recommend Antec, Enermax, Fortron, PC P&C.
Go for quality over wattage but try to get above 380W.

KGB man is right... I wouldnt even power the system back up until you get a new PSU. The more you run a system with a borked power supply, the greater chance you have of ruining anything attached to it.

I guess I'll have to take my chances because I have a lot of work to do this week. The machine has been running for a few hours now and it hasn't happened so far.

Thanks for the help.

If you can take a jog down to your local pc hardware store, buy a £70/$100 PSU, it will only take 10 minutes to fit it, taking it slowly.

Just make sure all your drives are plugged back in afterwards

I'm taking the comp into the shop at the end of the week anyway so I'll have new CDRW/DVDR drives installed and obviously a new PSU. Perfect timing 😛
