Weird CD burner problem

I'm having a problem with my CD burner. Its a HP 9310i, and I've had it for a year or so without it giving me any trouble. I'm using Adaptec Easy CD Creator 5.0 Platinum with the latest patches (downloaded yesterday) to burn CDs. Data CDs burn without problem, but I can't burn any audio discs.

Whenever I try to do so, Easy CD Creator looks like its doing what it should be. It goes through each track and supposedly writes that track to the disc. The total process takes five or six minutes like it should, BUT when I put the disc in my CD player it won't play. Its not the CD player's problem because I've played tons of burned discs in that player. I've used the same brand discs from the same spindle, and they've worked before in my CD player. The CD player is able to read the disc and it shows the right number of tracks, and the right length of each track, but when I play the disc, there is no sound.

I tried playing the disc in my computer as well. Still no sound. Opening the disc in explorer shows all of the tracks on the disc, but each track is only 40k in size. Thats not right.

What could be wrong? I'm pretty sure I've got all the Easy CD Creator settings right. I'm using track at once mode, finalizing the disc, and I'm using a 10x write speed with 12x media, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm really at a loss here...

It worked fine for audio CDs before I wiped my hard drive a few months back. I had to re-install everything. I'm running Windows XP. I can burn audio CDs using Windows Media player, but Media Player won't handle MP3s unless you buy an add-on pack for the MP3 codec.

Audio CDs require special attention. I had the same burner as you and I wrote at 10X and only some of them played in my old stereo. Try reducing the speed to about 6X or 8X. That should fix the problem. Hope this helps.

maybe the new patch makes you only "test" the burn, and not actually write until you check in options? just a thought, i use the (superior imho) Nero 5.5

the file sizes are supposed to be 40k - they're *.cda files, right? they just point to sectors on the CD where the actual audio is stored. And do you have the digital audio cable hooked up to the drive in your puter that's trying to burn/play this music? uhm...what about reducing the speed? i've heard of that one before so these guys are probably right...the digital audio cable is just a suggestion. and yeh, the new roxio stinks. everyone uses nero and/or fireburner now - check em out :)
