So I am building my first system....and I have the DVD drive set as master(perhaps I should set it as slave) but when I disconnect the ide cable, I get the drive to open, which shows that it isnt' teh psu, tehn I plug the ide cable in, and I get no response from teh drive...it is installed correctly..do you reckon it should be set to slave?

I am booting off of a SATA Raptor primary, have a Seagete IDE as secondary, and the dvd seperate....all have their own cables, cause they just aren't long enough to connect the Seagate and teh dvd to teh same cable, but they are both secondaries to the SATA. Should the seagate be put as a master drive and the DVD as a slave? Any thoughts?

The mobo isn't recognizing the DVD or the seagate, but is recognizing the WD!

Cheers

Jeff

P.S> the mobo is an ASUS PC-DL

Ok, I got the DVD drive to open up, apparently I needed to put it on the primary IDE channel...I don't know why. Here is where it gets weird, when I leave the Seagate unplugged (that is the IDE slave drive in teh secondary IDE channel), the Raptor (SATA) shows up as the primary. The minute I plug in teh Seagate, teh Raptor disappears, and the screen doesn't even see it...thoughts?

There's 4 SATA channels, isn't there? 2 on the Northbridge and 2 on the extra chip?

My IC7-G is weird like this, just switch the IDE channels when using the ICH-5 SATA ports, it won't let me use CD/DVDroms on IDE#2.

.. You might try this..

It doens't matter which master I plug my Raptor in to. As long as it is the master SATA...but I have issues with it recognizing that I have an IDE drive now..playing with the jumpers on teh DVD, and then I'll play with teh 2nd HD.....right now first is teh Raptor, then the DVD, then the 2nd HD....but I am only on stage 2 :p

Yeah, that is what I am playing with now...I have gotten it to show the dvd and the raptor...now the tricky part will be the Seagate!! :p Not sure why this is either...but hoping it works! Should I have the seagate set to cable select or slave? or should it be set to master?

Set it to master and put it on the end of the IDE Cable.
Trying to find the manual to my mobo... when you use the ICH SATA channels, it's detected as IDE Channel #3&4 and it does something weird with #1&2..

I think Abit has Windows based flasher, though I think you can flash it from a cd with a Win98 Boot disk.

Not sure about that one..
There's an Award Flash Utility on the Bios page..( at post screen it asks to start that, but I bet it has to be on a floppy )

uggghhh...that is what i figured...I'll just have to wait to flash the bios on this thing then, but it is letting me install windows, which I am fairly happy with it...some odd quirks that I am going ot have to fine tune...like it posting no bios installed, not sure what that is about, but I'll sort it out!! Thanks for your help by the way KaO!
