Normally $30 and I don't ever remember seeing them on sale before.
Very handy for studio photography if your camera doesn't have a PC connector or you just don't want a cord hanging off your camera.
I figure anyone doing studio photography knows what it is. But for anyone interested, it's an optical trigger. It senses when the flash on your camera goes off and triggers your studio strobe lighting. I imagine electronic tinkerers could find other uses for it as well.
