Many would recommend against using gloves because it doesn't encourage you to get wrist strength as much (they are quite grippy). This is the same reason why many don't use straps. I use straps if I'm doing heavy deadlifts or shrugs, but my wrist strength isn't as good as it should be. I've seen pics of powerlifters deading more than anybody here can without the aid of straps. They do help control the weight, but they definitely aren't a necessity.
WTF should I care when I can outlift most of the guys in my gym half my age. I also use an armband for tendinitous which has helped me a lot as far as pain goes.

I seriously doubt anybody thinks SpeedDemon is a pussy when he benches 335 lbs at only 5'6". It's all a matter of preference. I guess if you go to the gym to strut like a Rooster then what other sweaty mens think of you is important. But if you go there to get in shape and improve your physique all you should care about is the results.

I use the ocelot gloves as well. I like the padding material they have. Surprised that so many people here have them since most people use the Harbinger ones.

What!? most gym guys think you're a pussy for using gloves? That's news to me...in my gym close to everyone uses them, even the biggest dudes. Would you really want to use your bare hands on the bar after gods knows how many people have just used them?

I can't tell you how many time when in the locker room I've seen guys use the toilet facilities without washing their hands afterwards. Going barehanded means you stand a chance of sharing some slobs fecal matter! Of course I wipe off the equipment before and after I use it (especially after I first witnessed this)

I didn't say that you should care; I was just making a statement 🙂
Shrug 300+?!?!?!

I shrug 2x 45lb dumbells...
If you have an olympic bar and it's in a cage you can pile on weight for ages and be able to shrug. I would say that the average non-working out male can shrug a good bit more than they could bench.

You probably workout at a "fitness facility".

Heh, I hope you don't lift after me !

Skoorb, I work out at a muscle head gym (Powerhouse Gym in Springfield, IL). Before that it was at a Gold's gym. Most guys wear gloves and chalk is discouraged because everyone makes a fscking mess of it.

My SO HATES rough hands and I hate peeling callouses off my hands all the time. So I wear gloves. And I doubt anyone would call me a pussy in the weight room. (Though these shingles are reducing me to a quivering vagina...I must admit)

Real men don't wear gloves. Real men roll their hands through a tub of broken glass and then dip them in salt before lifting weights.

I also use an armband like Red when I lift b/c the tendon/or ligament below the bicep towards the left elbow will get tendonitis occasionally due to microtears... I really only use it on super heavy max lifts to protect the elbow area, or if the elbow starts to hurt during a lift cycle... Also, when squatting, I use a belt and knee wraps b/c I have torn up knees from Varsity track from high school. I don't see any reason not to use protective gear to build mass, I don't want to end up at age 45-60 with a limp, or a doctor telling me I can never lift again b/c I didn't protect my ligaments/tendons/body. Totally not worth it IMO, longevity is key. Also, I'd say a little over half of my buds at the gym use gloves, and they're well respected and some of them make me look like a shrimp (the strongest guy at our gym is this black guy who does construction up in Baltimore, saw him benching the 175 dumbbells 10X!!). Nobody really gives a dam what kind of gear you use: if you can push the weight, show up on a regular schedule (many people flake out, come in once every two weeks and then ask you how to get big), respect others (help out someone who needs a spot), you will earn the respect.

While on the subject of longevity, I've found that lifting ultra heavy will eventually catch up with you... I used to only lift heavy, but now alternate heavy and light weeks due to recurring injuries in the elbow and shoulder areas... this seems to have fixed the problem, now hitting new highs 🙂

I use these Schiek gloves.

Pretty comfortable, and still no tears on them after like 5-6 months.

Ill also confirm that some of the bigger guys also use gloves at my Xport (formerly Powerhouse) gym. I really dont care what others think of me anyway...I'd much rather have my hands remain callus-free.

I used to wear gloves with wrist support b/c my wrists were weak (no comments fellas) 😉 Then I realized they would never strengthen if I gave them a crutch all the time. So I stopped wearing then and my wrist/forearm strength improved. And where I went to the gym (Gold's Gym) none of the big guys wore gloves, they only used straps for certain things. Now some other pansy ass gym bought out Gold's and turned it into a newbie fest with there light dumbell only set and their low prices. Which could bring me to another whole topic on Gym etiquette and how the stupid ass newbies don't follow it.

None. It's not fear of being seen as a wuss - I work out at home after all - I just don't think they're necessary and why buy something I don't need?

I have a pair of gloves but they never seemed to really help (I think they are too small).

Thus, I don't use gloves and I just have horribly rough spots in about six places on each hand. Once every few weeks I clip them a bit and start all over again.

I'm an amatuer weight lifter at best so my opinion probably doesn't count for a lot...but I don't like wearing gloves doing any activity, particularly one where I'm doing heavy lifting over my head. I just don't feel like I can get a good grip with gloves as apossed to hands.

Its the same reason I take my socks off when I need to stand on a chair to change a lightbulb.

Ya'll need to start lifting with the real men in Alabama. At the gym I used to go to it would be women with gloves, and there was one guy with gloves, and the rest used flesh and worked up good manly callouses.

yes i don't work at a hardcore gym...I workout at a "fitness facility" thank you very much. I'd rather check out hot chicks in tight spandex pants than hear a bunch of dudes grunting and groaning with each rep. 😉
