Weightlifting Gloves

I won't use straps either.

I agree about the gloves part but it's hard deadlifting or doing barbell shrugs with X times the amount of your own bodyweight, even under/overhand grip.

Yup, that's exactly why I use them. Shrugs just kill me and the manly pride of not using gloves is just pointless.

Oh, and I just use a pair of blue Nike gloves.

I use a pair of Ocelots that are padded with some kinda Nerf-like material. The generally last me about 6 months until I either tear a hole through them or wear the Nerf into some sort of hard leather.

Most Harbinger/Leather gloves only last me half that amount of time before they get annihilated.

I refuse to use lifting straps, but I use gloves. Basically I see no reason why people think gloves are for pvssies... Just takes some of the pressure off your hand. Straps on the other hand mean you can't physically grip that kinda weight which means you have a weak a$$ grip.

I use straps for deadlift and barbell shrugs (120's) at the end of my workout, it would be impossible to stimulate the traps without them.

I'll have to check out the Ocelots though! How much are they?

Yah, me too. I've had Harbingers before and actually liked them, but I'd like to look into the Ocelots. The Nike's I have right now aren't all that bad but they're getting to be pretty damn old. (Close to a year but still holding up reasonably well.)

I use my black Nike gloves, usually only for shrugs. I had 2 pairs of Valeos and they fell apart after 3 or so months of lifting.

I don't use them and neither do the majority of guys. FWIW if you're a guy in a gym lifting weights with gloves you'll probably be seen by the other guys as a pussy.

Many would recommend against using gloves because it doesn't encourage you to get wrist strength as much (they are quite grippy). This is the same reason why many don't use straps. I use straps if I'm doing heavy deadlifts or shrugs, but my wrist strength isn't as good as it should be. I've seen pics of powerlifters deading more than anybody here can without the aid of straps. They do help control the weight, but they definitely aren't a necessity.

If I remember right they were ~$30-$35. I could be wrong but I think the ocelot ones are made by Valeo, but must be their premium ones or something.

I worry more about myself when I'm at the gym and could really care less what everyone else thinks. If someone wants to judge me as a pussy because I use gloves then that's fine. The last thing I want to concern myself with is what some guy at a gym thinks about what I have on my hands. WTF is he doing looking at my hand for anyway. 😛

I wear gloves similar to the OP, but without the padding. They're a year or two old by now, and so they have quite a few holes...but the wrist wraps still work, so that's the important part for me.

As far as being seen as a pussy or whatnot...I truly could care less. Most of the guys (including some of the biggest ones) at my gym wear them. If there's a group of people that are so concerned with my work out that they have to pass personal judgment on me because of my gym attire, then that's pretty sad. Besides, I just let my body and my lifts speak for me.

I'd rather not thrash my wrists and palms, so gloves it's been for a few years, and gloves it'll continue to be.

And if you are in the gym concerned about what the other sweaty dudes think of you, you are there for the wrong reasons. If you can lift the weight to back it up, who cares how you look. After having wrist surgery and feeling the little bones in my hand pop when doing random exercises, I could care less if people think I look dumb with gloves. Likewise, after I blew out my knee I have to wear wraps when I squat.

Well then guys continue to wear gloves 🙂 Just remember that a lot of guys are thinking you're pussies!

BTW is there a link between people who wear gloves and not knowing that the term is couldn't care less? 😛

This is English...the term is what we make it to be 🙂 The beauty of linguistic change.
Edit: besides, I've always thought "could care less" sounds better.

There are a lot of built guys at my gym that wear gloves... and when you're like me and you shrug in excess of 300lbs, theres only so many reps you can do before the bar (or weights, whatever you use) tear your skin up.

To each his own. I don't find gloves necessary for anything else.

I have straps, got 'em as a freebie from bodybuilding.com ... but I've never used them.

I would only use them in rare scenarios ... because they aid a weak grip. Granted some extreme weights you just can't grip, I just feel like it's cheating ... I dunno

if perspiration is an issue, then get some chalk.

Never gloves.

Wraps sometimes, depending on who I am lifting with (using them with some people will get me screamed at)

Careful with the wraps, as they can become a crutch.

I love my calluses. 😀

I can't find the gloves I first got when I started weight training years ago. They've disappeared in the past few months, so I'm using Ironclad performance work gloves seen here.
