The only diet that I know that works long term is the "Eat 5-6 times a day" diet. You need to figure out how many calories she burns a day (BMR) and then take ~400 calories a day off of that total, and divide it up between 5-6 meals a day. Drinking water alone will cause most people to lose weight over a length of time. 3000 Calories = 1lb of Fat.

If she burns 2000 calories a day (BMR), and she wants to lose 20lbs, if she has a 500 calorie a day deficit, it will take her 5 months to lose it. Add in exercise at least 3 days a week and her deficit becomes greater, meaning she can lose it in 3-4 months. Become a fanatic and religiously weigh foods, eat perfectly and exercise daily and it can be done in 2 months.

Good luck!

Best answer so far. My BMR (minimum amount of energy the body needs per day to function) was 2000 cal/day, so I strictly limited my diet to 1500 cal/day. I lost a steady 1-2 lbs per week over 3 months. The first couple of weeks were tough. But once you see the weight coming off, it gets easier as it motivates you.
