I only worked a half day today, so I'm (sort of) on time this week.

In the event we have any non-crunching AnandTech readers who happen to wander into this thread, I'll repeat what is obvious and well known to the rest of us:

This last week has been an exciting week, with not only the local ongoing Folding at Home race, but late Friday night (my time) also marked the start of a brief, international, 3 day race for PrimeGrid (And we're kicking some butt!).

Then this week, those of us who have taken advantage of the 72 hour 'pause' in the local FAH race have to pull our machines into the pits for some tire changes and suspension adjustments, take on some fuel and get back out on the track as soon as possible. 🙂

The Folding at home race ends January 1, 2016, 12:00 UTC.

And if those non-regulars are still reading, Distributed Computing is where you allow your computing device (smartphones included) to work on things like medical research, mathematical stuff, sifting through telescope data to further the field of Astronomy, and many other 'citizen science' pojects. It allows networked computers to band together to act as a supercomputer. And you should join us. 😉

I've been contributing to WCG for the last few years, but I've lost interest in their projects, so now I'm back on F@H as Dainbramaged. It looks like my 5770 doesn't really do much more than 22k ppd so could someone please help me with what I should replace it with. Are Nvidia superior to AMD for F@H or the opposite?
 
Nvidia is far superior on the high end. My 280X does 120k ppd on a good day. GTX980 does 380k ppd, GTX980Ti does 450k minimum, some have reported the Ti as high as 600k overclocked.

The 280X's are clocked around 1000 to 1100 depending on which model. The ppd averages about 120k as a guess. Often it's as low as 80k, then next time I check it says 160k, etc. Most times its about 120k.

You have control over the settings, such as number of cores to use, percentage of time to run, and whether to run off the battery or only once plugged in and at a certain percentage of charge.

For example, my primary phone is set to use 3 cores, 70% of the time, only while plugged in and only once the charge level reaches 90%. Additionally most phones have temp sensors to protect the battery and electronics.

It is good to 'exercise' the battery, and as I rarely dip below 60% charge, I occasionally let BOINC run off the battery, down to 10%. Doesn't take too long to get there, lol.

Ah ok, cool.
I was also forgetting the 280X is much closer to the HD 7970 than my HD 7950 😉.

Re phone's, ah fair enough, good to know you can throttle DC for them too.
Re their batteries, I though it was only NiCad batteries that needed cycling? Or is that not what you're talking about? 😉
 
I may be thinking of my RC batteries, which have multiple cells. Need to bring them all down and hit the equalize setting on the charger on occasion.
