Greetings to all, I hope the last week has treated you each very well.

Our events calendar can be found here, and things look calm for now, just the Tour de Primes, unofficial race for fun, with exclusive badges, to see who can find the most primes, for this month.

The races kick into high gear late in March, with both a Formula BOINC Sprint, and a PG challenge!

Tony.

********************************************
In the event we have any non-crunching AnandTech readers who happen to wander into this thread:
Distributed Computing is where you allow your computing device (smartphones/tablets included) to work on things like medical research, mathematical stuff, sifting through telescope data to further the field of Astronomy, and many other 'citizen science' projects. It allows networked computers to band together to act as a supercomputer.
And you should join us.
Thanks go, as always, to the folks responsible for Free-DC, who make this possible by keeping score for us.

Thanks for the stats, Tony!

I don't know why but cosmology invalidates about 30% of the work I produce, which is frustrating and I think its something on their server that does it.

Thanks for the stats Tony.
Just over one month to go before the first FB Sprint begin. Next week will also mark first pre-season testing for F1 team in Barcelona.

wonder how many years a rack full of Tesla V100s would need to decipher @Howdy2u2's message?
His message should be included into Enigma@Home as it's comparable to the complexity of other Enigma messages.

I too am running Cosmology@Home at the moment. But while you are running camb_legacy, I am running the camb_boinc2docker application even though I detest VirtualBox based projects.

So far, all successfully finished tasks turned out valid. I had a small fraction of tasks (0.8 %) which failed with a computation error after varying percentage of progress, and an even smaller fraction of tasks (0.1 %) which got stuck with "Postponed: VM Hypervisor failed to enter an online state in a timely fashion", which then causes the client to stop fetching any new tasks. Today I wrote a script which is meant to automatically abort the stuck tasks. Will post once the script proves functional.

Of the 144 tasks on profile, 124 have completed. Of the 124, 44 tasks have gone "Validate Error" which is a non-descriptive error message. Usually with "Validate Error" the validator can't find the result file. And that is a big issue if ~30% of my work gets marked as Invalid

I clicked through a bunch of your invalid results. Most haven't been completed by somebody else yet, only a few are completed by somebody with a valid result, and quite a lot had a computational error or other problem by those who ran the WU before or after you. Suspicious. Besides, the site is often very slow; a few hours ago the database was down entirely. Makes me glad that my validations go over well.

I have had a skim of the code. It looks like the file transfer is asynchronous from the validation process. And the validation process does not check if the file has been successfully transferred onto disk before it does its thing. So what may be happening to me, is that I finish uploading and I report finished tasks. But in the backend the uploaded files from the upload handler looks like it hasn't completed its processing.

So the validator expects to find those files where its specified on the projects server end, but it doesn't so it issues a "Validate Error"

Here is the validator code: https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/blob/master/sched/validator.cpp
Here is the file upload handler: https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/blob/master/sched/file_upload_handler.cpp

I do hope I am incorrect about my code analysis, and the process is synchronous

I quickly scrolled through these two source code files and concluded that I can't form an opinion right away... I.e. you suspect the client may go from "finished upload of xyz123" to "reporting n completed tasks" sooner than the server's upload handler wrote/ moved/ closed the files?

Right, because lots of other projects with overcrowded servers would be affected by such a race condition. Though maybe Cosmology@Home has some own file shuffling going on in the background, such that they introduce a race condition of their own.

One thing is obvious; their server is frequently overloaded. Of course that should create at most a validation backlog (like during the 2017 Pentathlon), not invalidations.

Regarding my better luck than yours: My client lets most of the uploaded tasks sit a long time as "ready to report", but there are bound to be a few tasks with a short period between uploading and reporting. camb_boinc2docker results consist of a single file of 2.6 MB size. Are camb_legacy result files larger? (camb_legacy's WUs are larger, according to working set size, CPU time, and credits.) Though camb_legacy's and camb_boinc2docker's validators might be totally different code anyway.

@StefanR5R , those hypervisor errors are very annoying, I'd be interested in that script.
Mean time between recurrences of these errors on my host with Cosmology@Home has been about a day so far. So there will be 1 or 2 days until I see whether or not the script works as I hope.

Is it LHC@Home for which you are looking for such a watchdog script? Are the faulty tasks showing up in the output of "boinccmd --get_tasks" with "scheduler state: preempted", or any other distinctive attributes?

As I noted, only a small fraction of tasks end this way on my machine, which is why it's feasible to keep going with this project and application. I only aim to decrease the amount of personal monitoring and intervention. My failed VM jobs look like this:
https://www.cosmologyathome.org/result.php?resultid=65094091

There is stuff about "object not found" and "invalid object state" and "access denied" and whatnot in my log. Whereas yours says "access denied" only. Could there be a filesystem permissions problem? Some Linux users encounter this due to different user IDs being used by boinc-client vs. vbox. In theory, Windows could have filesystem permissions problems too, but I don't recall any forum discussions along these lines. Though those Linux filesystem permissions problems make 100 % of the vbox based jobs fail, not just a random few.

I honestly don't know. My suspicion was that it had to do with how Vbox was handling sleep or shutdown states on certain hardware, though all of the settings seem to be handled by the downloaded vdi files, with no way to impose a global rule upon them. All just supposition on my part.

Ok, so the more I 'forum' the more I learn the meaning of my own native language, even though I am familiar with the term, the meaning.....not so much. ;)

I didn't realize stats was a palindrome.......
