Weekly DC Stats - 15AUG2021

Welcome,

of course several of the TeAm are currently engaged in a PrimeGrid challenge. 2½ days done, 7½ days more to go, and we are currently in second place, with merely 4 % lag behind the first team. So, join us if you don't mind searching for some primes* for a few days. :-) "Prime Sierpinski Problem LLR (PSP)" is the relevant subproject; head over to the challenges thread to work out the details.

*) Actually, finding (or most of the time: not finding) primes is just a means to an end in the subproject in question. Its real goal is to look for the smallest prime Sierpiński number. Sounds boring to you? Well, then how about some contest stats instead, complete with graphs? Have a look at statsgr.id, or at seti-germany.de.

Back to the subject. Last week, the TeAm's overall ranking changed thus: One up and one down down at Private GFN Server; one up at World Community Grid. Hurray for the latter! :-) Congrats to all our regular and occasional WCG contributors.

Apropos, we had consistently good participation in Rosetta lately too. I wonder when the TeAm will advance there? The FreeDC site estimates this will be in 4 or 5 weeks.

You had 10,428,340 points at PrimeGrid before the challenge, right at this moment you have got 10,723,872 (+295,532). But your current challenge score is already 422,858 because the challenge points are already put on the scoreboard before all validations completed.

Thanks Stefan ! Thats what I thought, but I had no idea on real numbers. That 422k should be like half a day for me, since I added so many boxes late.

Longest and hottest summer of my life, and the smoke from fires has not made it enjoyable. Even at a beach. Cough, cough....

Maybe I should add all hardware to climate research, or stop puting cause just adding to climate woes? I'll start a climate DC philosophy thread... NOT!

Smoke is supposed to be "moderate" this evening, so I can open the windows and hopefully cool off the house tonight. Next year I get whole house A.c., but will likely need to buy a generator to ensure that I can run the thing during peak temps? Too much growth here and the power companies are struggling to keep up with the juice!

Yeah, I was ramping up again last week when there were finally new tasks available. But Rosetta ran out of tasks again, no communication or anything (I've seen someone complain about the lack of communication in their forums). So my rig did not even run a full day Switched over to WCG and am running there now.

It's great you've come over there too We can continue racing there!

I think it may have to do with the queue. I have each 64 core host with 125 running(times 3 64 core hosts), and about 800 ready to run (2400 total), and at the rate they finish, they gobble up any free units. I am being a hog, sorry.

Yeah, I was running with the standard queue settings... Usually, that's no big deal, and it allows me to switch over to another project faster. However, this time I already ran out of tasks overnight, and that was that... But well, so it's WCG now for me... Not that there's anything wrong with that

@Assimilator1: Don't forget to check your settings for data sharing (log in to the WCG site, then Settings (top right), then Data Sharing (menu on the left), and check Display my data). If you don't switch that on you won't show up in the stats (just like I did when I joined WCG ).

I took my main rig offline this morning and reinstalled it. After receiving the Debian bullseye release announcement a few days ago, I decided that I wanted to give it a try. This system is the easiest/fastest to reinstall, and also the least mission critical device in my network. If it doesn't work out, it'll take me an hour or so to get back to Debian buster.

Install went fine, however there are several error messages during bootup that weren't there with Debian buster. Also, the mouse wasn't working during setup (not that I'd need it, but it did work in the Debian buster installer). I'd say, these are the typical symptoms that the "wait for the first point release" mantra does also apply here Anyhow, none of these errors kept me from proceeding. Also, I don't care for missing sound card drivers etc.

The boinc-client package is now on 7.16.16 (vs. 7.14.2 in Debian buster).

So, it's up and running again. Let's see how that goes

Well, I'm ending this experiment as soon as my BOINC queue has emptied... Four crashes already with FAH and the nVidia driver. Three of these crashes took down the entire system. At least it can run BOINC when I'm not folding. Once all BOINC WUs have been completed, I'll try to get that FAH WU done, and then it's back to Debian buster... (most likely tomorrow morning)

Well, no chance to complete the FAH WU. Two more hard crashes while trying yesterday evening... I gave up and shut the system down over night. So, back on Debian buster and running full steam ahead again since ca. 10am.
