Weekly DC Stats - 12JUN2022

Welcome back to the Weekly Stats!

Around last weekend, there was a contest at Cosmology@home for 6 days via the new(ish) contest platform boincgames.com. We already saw credits from this sprint in the previous weekly stats; more came in this week of course.

Einstein@Home and MilkyWay@home received some special love this week — although not so much from those parts of the TeAm who are temporarily dealing with a condition called Summer. ;-) But I am also seeing some unusual GPUGrid and SRBase activity below which originated from the Northern hemisphere, AFAIK.

The TeAm's Folding@Home effort is holding steady. Although there was a slight drop in contributors to 76, compared to 81 in the week before, the team rank for weekly production went up a little from 16th to 15th. More than 40% of our Folding points keep coming from Mark. Directly, that is. I am sure that this commitment is also motivating others to contribute.

Looking to the days ahead: Whether we are afflicted by Summer or not, a 5 days contest at PrimeGrid will start on Friday. It's for CPUs only but will put the vector units to heavy duty.

In the event we have any non-crunching AnandTech readers who happen to wander into this thread: Distributed Computing is where you allow your computing device (smartphones/tablets included) to work on things like medical research, mathematical stuff, sifting through telescope data to further the field of Astronomy, and many other 'citizen science' projects. So how do I get into the stats list? I loaded BOINC for the first time and started LHC and have been crunching on it for a week for TeAm. Does Boinc automatically switch between projects? I also have climateprediction loaded, but never get any work for it

Some projects require you to consent to your stats being exported to stats sites, such as Free-DC which is used for pulling these stats. If you go to the LHC BOINC page and login --> click your account name in the top right hand corner --> LHC@home preferences make sure 'Do you consent to exporting your data to BOINC statistics aggregation Web sites?' is checkmarked. By default it would not be.

If that is checkmarked but you still weren't on the stats let us know, but I did find you listed on the TeAm with points, so I'm guessing it's just that checkmark. BOINC does automatically switch between projects based on your resource share as well as some settings in BOINC Manager, but I'm not sure on the nuance there since I normally just run one project at a time, but maybe somebody else will chime in more on that part. I believe Climate Prediction rarely has work, but I haven't ran it before. I think you can set your resource share on the Climate Prediction to something high, and then set your resource to other projects lower, and it will then prioritize Climate Prediction if and when it actually has work to download from there.

If that is checkmarked but you still weren't on the stats let us know, but I did find you listed on the TeAm with points, so I'm guessing it's just that checkmark. BOINC does automatically switch between projects based on your resource share as well as some settings in BOINC Manager, but I'm not sure on the nuance there since I normally just run one project at a time, but maybe somebody else will chime in more on that part. I believe Climate Prediction rarely has work, but I haven't ran it before. I think you can set your resource share on the Climate Prediction to something high, and then set your resource to other projects lower, and it will then prioritize Climate Prediction if and when it actually has work to download from there.

Yes I did install with virtuabox. Looks like climateprediction is gpu based? So i'll just skip it for now.

As far as I know, CPDN uses only single-threaded CPU tasks, if there is a GPU app I am not aware of it.

Check out the topmost "sticky" threads for several tips about preparing a computer for CPDN-specific platform support.

The server sends only work if the BOINC client claims to conform to a platform for which there is actual work queued on the server. What's more, if the computer implements this platform partially but not to the extent which CPDN needs (e.g., the computer misses one of the expected libraries), work may get sent to this computer but crashes immediately after it starts.
