Do you want to play?

  • Yes - I want to be a PC.

  • Yes - And I want to DM.

  • Yes - And I'm willing to DM if needed.

I'll only play if we use my 1st edition of Deities and Demigods with the Cthulhu and Melnibonean mythoi.
And we have to take a break when the pizza gets here. I hate getting grease on my character sheets.

Ok, where can I find 5E rules and how do you play online?

I played a bunch over the years. DM'ed too, but mostly for my kids. It's a ton of prep work, and I'm not sure I have the time for it, but I am interested. Ideally, I'd like to just play a pc, but would consider DM.

First question: what platform are we going to use for doing the virtual table top thing? And would this be one time game sesson for several hours, or regular meetings? My primary concern is that I wouldn't want to commit and then not be available. My schedule at work rotates, but I am usually available in the evenings after 8pm PST.

I'd probably be doing ready made modules instead of doing all the work myself. I've played 1ed, 2ed, some 3 and 3.5ed. I've got 4th ed books, but haven't actually played it. I'd be interested in looking at the 5e rules.

I'm not a fan of games where you have to compile a dozen modifiers on each dice roll to get a result. I like games with more roleplaying than rollplaying, and I like to keep the storyline moving.

I'm not a fan of 2 hours of in-character bickering over the price of a sword with the local blacksmith before setting off on an adventure either. I don't mean roleplaying on that level. Keep it simple, the story moving and everyone will have more fun.

I'm also not one of those DMs who is just trying to kill off player's characters. I'm also not a fan of someone who tries to tell me they rolled natural 18s on all 6 stats for their demi-god character. PCs don't have to be superheros to have fantastic adventures, and not every mage can have a psudeo-dragon for a familiar.

So someone with experience in a Virtual Table Top program (preferably free) that works well please make a recommendation. Maybe we can get this ball rolling.

My thinking is that anyone who is willing to DM makes the rules regarding time, edition, and platform. Frankly, I'd be down for 2E as much as 5E if someone would prefer to DM 2E (Boo 3E-4E!). 8PM PST would work for me, especially tuesday or thursday nights.

I'm reading the 5E stuff now, at least what is out. There is no DMG until December, and it's probably easier to do a slightly simplified 2E game.

The more I think about it the better it sounds. Lemme put some thought into it and see what I can find on my bookshelf and HD. It's been a while, so I will need to go over the 2nd edition rules again.

Either way, we'd be probably be tossing out some rules (like encumbrance, except in extreme situation where what you are carrying is impossible) just to keep the game moving along and fun.

I've not really played 3.5, only read through it a while back. Need to take a look at it, but I seem to remember it had A LOT of modifiers, abilities, feats, etc., and that takes mucho time to calculate during an online game.

No decisions yet though, but I would lean towards simple if I do it. Need more feedback.

Only DnD, not going to try to learn a new system and DM it. I'm also going to use some common sense mods as I go. If the rules fly against the flow of the game or common sense, then the rules have to bend a bit.

Also not going to go Munchkin either. HEHEHE, haven't used that term in years, haha.

Pathfinder is basically modified 3.5 so there are not that many differences and everything is free.

Personally, the best DM I ever had didn't give too much of a crap about the "rules". Dice < imagination.

Did this poor thread die before a game could start?

I've been playing 5e with a few groups IRL. Count me as a big fan of the system. Feels more like the old-school stuff with a few modernizations. I couldn't stand 3 or 3.5e with it's assumptions about magic items and gold per level setup like a giant treadmill, and 4e was just too weird and different for my taste.
