Weekend project - FINISHED! [Pics]

I've been working on a yard swing for the last three weekends for my wife's birthday (this past Saturday). I'm not a carpenter or even a woodworker, but I managed to put this together by myself. I think it turned out pretty damn good. Check it out:

The wood is all cedar, and under the swing is 18" square flagstone. The shrubs are pink hydrangia and the vines at the sides of the posts are pink/purple honeysuckle, which will climb the posts and cover the trellis in a few months.

This was actually a very fun project and should last 10 or 15 years, hopefully longer.

thats nice but looks like the chains are kinda thin..might snap if 2-3 folks get on it.
did u make calculations for weight? coz it might be dangerous.

The swing itself and the hardware to hang it is a kit (didn't mean to give the impression I hand made the swing part, just the rest). It's a five foot swing made for two people. We've had two adults and my 13 year old daughter on it swinging gently with no problems. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll keep my eye on the chains for signs of fatigue.

definately sexy. You need to add some tiny little tables to the posts to set drinks while you relax. 🙂

You know what? You're not the first person to tell me this. My neighbor asked me where was I going to put my beer. I told him I was going to staple a coozie to the post .

I will take your suggestion into serious consideration though 🙂.

I may be doing something like this. Did you cut a tenon at the top of the post where you attached the beam with carriage bolts?

nope, i just sandwiched the post with the beams. that gave me enough space between the beams to insert blocks (cut from the tops of the posts) to hang the swing from.

Nice job, looks great.

Of course now you can go around at work and tell everyone that you and your wife are into swinging these days. 😀
