I'm going to build a 10-person poker table this weekend. Still debating exactly how I want to do it, as I may want to have it as portable as possible. Any of you have a good idea for how to attach a table top to a table base securely (as securely as wood screws, if possible), but without making it permanent? I was thinking about making some sort of joints and attaching them to both poker table top & base...not sure yet though. :D

It's gonna be a fun weekend. :D

Update: day one is done.

Good luck on the project.

As for the table/base issue, I have no good ideas, but maybe a cross shaped brace on top of the base that sits flush with the table bottom and have the little pivot hooks that hook the table top to pins in the base. Hard to describe.

Maybe a table lock as seen here.

Construction begins soon. Heading out to buy a case of beer, and a few more supplies that I need (closed cell foam padding, pipe insulation...this is gonna be fun).

Pics shall follow.

Day one is done: I've cut the table to size (84"x42"), bought all of the necessary materials (including lots of beer :D), shaped the table to its oval size, and upholstered it with the foam and velvet.

Today we'll attach the bumpers, and cover the bumpers in vinyl fabric.

Very nice. I am thinking of building a cover to turn my dinner table into a poker table, where do you buy your table cloth? What material is the cover made of? Keep us posted with the project.

The material I used is micro velvet, which I got for $13/yd. You need about 3 yards for a typical table top, and this was more expensive than most fabrics, but it's certainly worth it. I'd either go with velveteen (~$9/yd) or if the extra $10 won't break the bank, I'd definitely go with this stuff.

aren't the ends supposed to be more round? like a half circle on the ends? From that pic, whoever sits at the corner is gonna get a weird spot.

Yeah, I modified the table to make it small enough to fit our living room (the table is 84" x 42" rather than most, which are 96" x 42"), which made the ends a bit sharper (I think -- looking at it now, I'm not sure why it's quite that sharp :D). The table fits 10 max, so there's no need for anyone to be directly on the corner. :p

I've tested sitting down at the corner, and we can fit 10 people very comfortably. The people "on the corner" aren't actually directly on the corners, but either way, it's still fine.

Did you figure out how to attach the top to the base yet be able to remove it yet?

Yup. I'm going to attach some cross-shaped sections to the base (one on each corner) that will align with attachments I'll put on the table, basically allowing the table to "drop on" the other one. It's not nearly as secure as screwing it on top of the table, but it'll definitely do.

Not sure if that makes sense, but I'll show some pics when I do that as well.

I was thinking dropping the tabletop in, then drilling horizontally and placing shortened carriage bolts through both the top and base preventing it from moving. You could even drill the carriage bolts and put a cotter pin through so it could not get knocked out, but that might be too much of a pain.

It's not perfect, but for around $100, I'm happy.

Nice. The site you linked in the OP, as well as your pics, have convinced me it's time to do the same. I went out yesterday and bought my materials, tonight it's time to get to work. I decided to do a table with the wood inlaid ring, similar to this, but without the drink holders. Pics should be up this weekend, I hope.

Still need to get something to protect the fabric; it's already got a few oil stains from people's hands. :(

Rob

Am I the only one who is weirded out by that last picture? On the bottom it looks like it is resting on the carpet, but the top is clearly level with the couch.
