I wanted a new flash, i bit the bullet and got the 430EX from BBY, but it was a tad bit more pricey than amazon so my original thought, get the 430EX, return it after my amazon camera gets here.. but on the way back I stopped by Canoga Camera (canogacamera.com) and asked them if they had the 430EX, and he goes its discontinued we got the 430EX II, i asked how much.

Well the 430EX @ BBY cost me $340
The 430 EX II @ Canoga Camera cost me 350.xx

Needless to say I am keeping the 430EX II and returning the unopened 430 EX to BBY.

I avoid used flashes. You never know if somone attached it to a power pack and went silly with it.

I went for a used 530ex I instead. Can always use more power and I wanted the wheel instead of the buttons.

EDIT: Got it on fredmiranda forums for 300.

I could never justify paying that much for a flash with such low power and features. I got my Sigma EF 500 Super (just shy of 580EX power) for $200 brand new.

geez.. you guys are buzz killers.

I like the flash, used it tonight, sometimes I wish it had a bit more power but if need be I can always get teh Sigma Super DG500 if need be later on and sell this one.

So far I like it, but I need a diffuser

Ah, screw it. Don't worry about them. IMHO opinion, owning multiple flashes, I always have one that is brand new. The rest I could get used.
And if you do get it off one of the forums boards, don't get it from a fashion photographer. They always have them hooked up to a power pack, and avoid them from wedding photogs that do the same.
I have a 430EX and a 580EX II that I bought brand new. If I get any more speedlites, they will be used.

Now wait just a minute here.

I use my 580EX on a power pack and it works just fine!

It does heat up quite a bit though on HSS, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I know dude. But heat kills bulbs like nothing else. I might have to resort to a power pack for my weddings. Although I will limit it to the action shots like garter/bouquet toss.
It kills me that my camera can do 6fps, but I only have enough juice to get 1, maybe 2 shots for each toss in mid air. Damn dark reception rooms.
Fashion photogs at the runways will go nucking futs with it.

It's not too late to take it back to get something with more power. ;)

A 580EX II just sold on POTN's board for $365. An original model just sold for $275. I've seen Sigma EF500s go as low as $125.

The 430 is a fine piece of equipment, but the photo market is so saturated that I hate seeing people toss away money when better alternatives can be had for less $$$.

Time to get a quantum flash....really. I'm thinking about it. But DAMN are they expensive. Replaceable bulbs though.

I'm just shocked you bought the original 430EX for $340. I got my 430EX over a year ago for about $220. Is the 430EX II worth the extra $100+ over the original?

IMO, no. You're throwing down 300+ for a flash that still can't be used as a master. If someone wanted to start small, than they should get a either get a cheapy, 430ex, 420ex that can later be used as a slave, or a 530ex (I or II) that can be used as a master.

Yup... you overpaid. I got my 580EX II 6 months ago for $400 out the door. With a 580 you have the ability to do wireless master slave configurations.
