Wedding registry for computer stuff?

I just typed out a long-ass post only to gt sent back here with a blank screen cos of "censored words."

Thinking of registering for computer parts like mobo, cpu, ram, etc.

THoughts?

You just want a reason to avoid the honeymoon requirements.

"Sorry Wifey, I can't come to be right now. I just about got all the wires connected between the motherboard and case. I want to get this sucker up and running tonight so we can edit the wedding videos in the morning."

Few things:

Sex Smurf--your name cracks me up cos my fiancee goes by Smurfy on the boards (not here) , particularly the one I met her on. I still call her Smurfy sometimes.

I already have lots of tools. I work on my house, car, motorcycle, and computers with almost all my spare time. But I guess I coudl think of some MORE.

Already asking for money to everyone. Some people refuse and you haev to register, or according to my cousin, I "will end up with 5 crystal bowls."

Finally, we're not having a honeymoon. We're getting married Spet 4th, and she has a kid that will already be in school. Just back home to the daily grind. Maybe next summer we'll take a trip.

We both would benefit from a nice computer.

In the original post I explained that we already each own a house so we have plenty of appliances, furniture, etc. She's been married before so she has the obligatory nice China, silverware, etc.

We're kind of reaching for things to register for. So far we've thought of a grill and some nice high thread count bedlinens.

So we're looking for other stuff.

I think that is somewhat tacky...
We just had our wedding shower last month, and although we did register for china and the usual, we also registered for things at Home Depot as well.
People thought it was great that HD had a registry and it really helped us as we just bought a new home.
Its one thing to register for things for your home that you both (in essence) can use, but computer stuff seems a little too "out there". just my opinion.
Thats just as bad as people registering for stuff at stores then taking it back for a store credit to buy designer clothes.

You, sir, have my respect. You found and managed to tame a nerd chick. The best of luck. And your best bet is to have a little chat with each person you're expecting gifts from, rather than to do the whole registry thing. Perhaps bust out a webpage with some SQL and run your own registry with links to the shyt you want so they can't fvck it up.

But....seriously....don't do it. NOBODY is going to buy computer parts and stuff off of a wedding registry. It just ain't gonna happen.

Best bet would be to drop some hints to family members or something that a nice, new, Dell system would be agreeable (and I know it really wouldn't - but you are NOT going to be able to get people to buy you PC parts....you could maybe - MAYBE - have an outside shot at getting a pre-built Dell system from somebody if one or both of you are particiularly young. Or, perhaps, if her kid is in school - play the angle "well, we've already got an awful lot, but if someone wanted to buy us a Dell system as a wedding gift, it'd really be great for the kid". Not saying anyone would BUY that, but it's about your only real shot.)

Funny thing is....about a decade from now, people will be looking back on this thread and wonder WTF the big deal is about buying computer for a wedding gift - of COURSE that's an option!

Buuuut....not yet....

You know I was thinking of starting our own wedding registry webpage but my firend who hooked me up with web space let his registration lapse I guess. That would be a good learning thing too.
