Wedding Gifts

There have been several threads recently asking for help in selecting a wedding gift. Some of these threads have been ruined by gutter-minded threadcrappers (unfortunately not an extinct species.)

I would like to start a new thread in which we can discuss the subject in a civilized manner.

I suggest giving something unlike the other gifts. Everyone gets waffle irons and sheets and fondue pots.
Give something personal, something you made yourself. AND PUT MONEY IN IT. ;)

When a friend's daughter got married, many years ago, I decided to give her some cash, wrapped in a memorable fashion.

I purchased three small wooden hinged-lid boxes (such that they would nest, one inside another.) I decorated each box differently with glass beads, acrylic paints, and découpage. Inside the smallest box I placed a $100 bill that I had folded into the shape of an origami flying crane, like this.

When the bride removed the wrapping paper (also handmade,) she was delighted with the decorated box. But wait! There's more! She opened the box, and inside it was... another decorated box! And inside that box was yet another. When she finally got to the origami money, she was laughing and crying and obviously having a very good time. The money, of course, was undamaged (origami involves only folding, not cutting,) and I was going to unfold the little money-bird carefully for her, but her new husband grabbed it and gleefully stuffed it down her cleavage, to be retrieved later as honeymoon "mad money."

Decades later, my friend's daughter still remembers this gift; almost every time I see her, she thanks me for the decorated boxes (which she uses as jewelry boxes,) and she tells everyone that the best wedding gift was when I "gave her the bird."

Have any of you given or received really unique wedding gifts? We'd like to hear your stories.

This is pretty much what I though of. I got my close friend a pair of waterford crystal champagne glasses when she got married. She loved them.

Do people still register places. You know like for china, silver, towels and stuff? Also where are they going to live? People always need stuff for their house/apartment. When my wife and i got married we moved into a house we bought. A friend of mine bought us a vaccuum cleaner, shopvac, brooms, buckets, dust pans and a bunch of stuff like that. I know it sounds cheesy but we actually needed that stuff and we didn't have to go buy it. The point is that maybe something more practical than etched glasses. (although those are nice too).

WombatWoman - an addition to your gift, if you feel comfortable with it, and you think it would be well received -

I've seen lots of "love chests" given out as wedding gifts. It's basically a wicker chest that is glued shut. It's got a slot on top of it. There's a little note that says that everytime the couple makes love, they are to put a $1 or $5 into the chest. When they are ready to take a trip for their 5 year anniversary, they are supposed to crack open the chest and use the $$ for their getaway.

Kind of a neat idea if the couple is disciplined enough to follow through with it.

Also, for my friend who got married, all of us groomsman pitched in and got them a really nice TV. It was a pleasant upgrade from their humble 19" TV :)

In the words of my friend after he opened it: "BEST GIFT EVAR!" :D But he's a guy...and doesn't go for pink hand towls, a complete candle stick collection, and 3 of the same cake pans :)

That gives a whole new meaning to "If i had a dollar for every time...."
I should start a plan like that with my gf :)

About 100 bucks plus tax. They were some special millenium thing in a nice gift box. There's probably something similar available.

Yeah Skoorb and I registered for china (MY family was pretty much pushy that we do!) and his family provided the crystal. We certainly got a lot of beautiful gifts. My wedding shower was a "bathroom towel" shower so we got tons of beautiful bath towels, hand towels, decorative towels, you name it.

Of course, we got prints, money and a George Foreman grill as well!

A print is a really nice thing to give someone, especially if it represents something that is special. I got one of the view from where we got married. Signal Hill, St. John's, Newfoundland Canada. Beautiful spot. Absolutely breathtaking.
