There have been several threads recently asking for help in selecting a wedding gift. Some of these threads have been ruined by gutter-minded threadcrappers (unfortunately not an extinct species.)
I would like to start a new thread in which we can discuss the subject in a civilized manner.
I suggest giving something unlike the other gifts. Everyone gets waffle irons and sheets and fondue pots.
Give something personal, something you made yourself. AND PUT MONEY IN IT.
When a friend's daughter got married, many years ago, I decided to give her some cash, wrapped in a memorable fashion.
I purchased three small wooden hinged-lid boxes (such that they would nest, one inside another.) I decorated each box differently with glass beads, acrylic paints, and découpage. Inside the smallest box I placed a $100 bill that I had folded into the shape of an origami flying crane, like this.
When the bride removed the wrapping paper (also handmade,) she was delighted with the decorated box. But wait! There's more! She opened the box, and inside it was... another decorated box! And inside that box was yet another. When she finally got to the origami money, she was laughing and crying and obviously having a very good time. The money, of course, was undamaged (origami involves only folding, not cutting,) and I was going to unfold the little money-bird carefully for her, but her new husband grabbed it and gleefully stuffed it down her cleavage, to be retrieved later as honeymoon "mad money."
Decades later, my friend's daughter still remembers this gift; almost every time I see her, she thanks me for the decorated boxes (which she uses as jewelry boxes,) and she tells everyone that the best wedding gift was when I "gave her the bird."
Have any of you given or received really unique wedding gifts? We'd like to hear your stories.
