A lot of my friends are starting to get married this summer and in the future and I have no idea how much to spend on a gift. I am a student and going alone. I was thinking $50 was the right amount to spend. I pulled up their registry and found a couple items that went to about $50 but haven't purchased yet. Is this the right amount or is there some easy formula to calculate the amount?

I would normally say a minimum of a $100 cash gift, but in your case $50 in a card is acceptable.

Is cash/check more appropriate than purchasing something of that value from the registry?

$100 is the minimum for one person these days. $200 a couple normally. In your case, $50 is probably the best you can do.

Not necessarily more appropriate, but most couples would appreciate the cash. Weddings are expensive!

if one person goes and gives us $50 as their gift, there's no hard feelings. I really wouldn't worry about it.
