Just double-check that you retain copyright to the papers you submit through the website.

Not stupid, or unnecessary.

Plagiarism is serious.

What's the website? I've never heard about this before.

lol its not stupid or uneeded, i mean its just to make sure people dont cheat. My college has the power to submit anybodys paper to a website that checks for plagerism. Cant remember what site though, they have a contract with them or something like that.

Hell my compsci class used a program that would compare two different peices of code and ignore variables etc and see if the logic was the same. Laughed so hard when kids got caught.

a good plagerism job isn't going to be found by a website.

But then again we turned our papers in printed on a dot matrix printer using this new word processor called "word perfect"

i guess this is a new thing for me and would probably a regular thing to do in the future for all classes. it's just i don't like people second guessing my work and i put so much time and effort into it. funny how it takes a few to cheat to effect us this much.

yea thats what we use at school here

cept i think our work only gets sent to that site if they suspect it of plagerism in the first place, not everytime we turn something in.

i know that some of my old teachers have a list of websites that THEY go through to check if their students have been cheating but i've never heard of a website that's soley dedicated to weed these people out FOR the teachers.

Plagiarism is rampant at colleges, why do you think it's stupid and unnecessary?

makes sense, lets teachers actually do their job instead of looking for people that are cheating, also reduces amount of second guessing while the teach is grading. I mean after being submitted to that site, they are confidant that it is all your own work.

I find it pretty insulting and have refused to allow a paper of mine to be submitted if it meant losing copyright. But I was the teacher's pet so I could get away with stuff like that.

Actually, TurnItIn.com has saved me. My teacher said my paper sounded plagerised, so I had a friend in college run my paper through TurnItIn.com, no results detected. Stupid bitch teacher still didn't trust me, I had to go to the Administration for her to give me a "C" on it. She didn't even re-read it, just came in one day and told me she gave me a C on it.

I hated that teacher.

Plagiarism is a violation of intellectual copyright. Given that publishing is the lifeblood of academics, this is no surprise...

There was a scandal of plagiarised papers at the University of Virginia a couple of years ago:

Buttzilla, please be aware that when using these sites you often transfer many of your rights guarenteed under copyright law to them.

We used that site at our school. Some of the business classes that are standardized use this.

I was told that frats have a bunch of papers stored away for their brothers to re-use... then the Internet got big. :) This has always been a problem, but never as big as it is now. I graduated in '99 so I didn't really deal with it, but I don't find it surprising these prevention methods are being more standardized now.
