Yep this would be the main concern, if the keys were regional, as many publishers sell games overseas for much lower prices. I believe this was a big deal around the launch of Orange Box where Valve shut down a bunch of keys that were being sold at like $15-20 using SE Asia keys. Blizzard having different retail pricing and subscription fees is also well known. Sounds like they are legit keys, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of these publishers started running IP checks and shutting down keys.

It's pretty simple, choose a game you want to steal keys for and find some video footage of aimbots/hacks/cheats in that game. Take that footage and upload it to youtube with a direct link to a file you claim is a download for the hack, but is actually a cd key stealer. People click the download link, get their key stolen and their game is now rendered unusable. Wash rinse and repeat for every filesharing site known to man, limewire, bittorrent, rapidshare etc etc. They can rack up thousands of keys in a day if they know what they are doing.

And it's all supported by people in this thread who think these keys are legit, screwing not only themselves but the people who bought the game legally.

I've have never bought form a site like this, so excuse my ignorance if I am asking something really stupid. but if stealing the keys makes the game stop working for that key why bother stealing a key at all? Why not buy like 10 copies of the game and just sell the same keys over and over? It sounds like it would have exactly the same effect.

For online play cd keys prevent two people with the same key from playing at the same time. If you buy a stolen key you risk not being able play because the person who bought the game legally is using his key at the same time. If they just bought 10 copies and sold the key a gazillion times over no one would ever be able to play and those who got the keys would presumably get really pissed off.

Ya, not sure how likely the possibility of these keys being obtained via trojans/keyloggers given many of the keys are perma-tied to a single account (particularly Steam, WoW etc).

Whats with the polish currency.

the thing i dont like about foreign merchants is they are all protected by a umbrella program that makes them immune to fraud/unauthorized chargebacks.

Lot's of speculation, but no proof to back up anything. If these sites are truly illegal, they would have been shut down. It's very easy to confirm wether the keys are stolen or not, because if they are stolen, the key is linked to a retailcopy that went out to some store, or online downloadservice. So if the 'illegal' company is selling keys, that have allready been sold, it would indeed be illegal. And I'm sure if it's illegal, it would have been checked out. And the website would have been taking offline by w/e company that can do so, because it would be a huge illegal activity.

I've often wondered how sites like these actually get the keys. Anyone know anything other than speculation? Just seems odd to me that, take Diablo II for example, there are several sites where you could purchase thousands of working keys from. They can't all be stolen/trojan'd keys, can they? Pure curiosity here.

Most of the time it is from legit purchases. They buy the games in bulk at low prices then simply keep the cd keys and toss the box. Some will mail you the box if you want for a fee.

Sorry that's BS.

Where is your proof ?
Some of these sites have been around for years. If they were selling illegal keys do you really think that they would still be around ?

And yes at bulk rates you can get the legal copies for the cost of the keys that they are selling. If you notice they do not sell the latest game keys. Most are games that are months/years old and available really cheap. Do you really think a site like gogamer.com can afford to sell copies of something like the latest Dawn of War for $35 if they were not making a profit. They are probably paying $20 a copy and that is a new release.

I bought Diablo II and the expansion last year for $5 from one of these sites. They sent me an "CD-key" (16-digit), which I added to my Blizzard store account to get the real CD-key (26-digit). It seems kinda weird since the games don't actually ship with 16-digit keys. I wonder where they got those "keys"
