I've had a second computer, a Duron 800MHz for a couple of months now. It's running Win2kPro and the IIS web & ftp server stuff. Problem is I can't think of any ideas for a website. I want to have something creative, fun, and atleast mildly interesting. Any ideas?

Also, what would y'all recommend aside from IIS? I've used Serv-U for FTP before, and it seemed easier to configure for setting up different accounts and permissions. Also, since I don't know much about web design other than a few simple tags, all the web server stuff in IIS is a little confusing.

Anyway, to reiterate:
1) Any ideas for a website
2) Helpful info, software, or guides for site design or the server itself

Thank you in advance. :)

play with what you want to do...

I wanted to learn how to do an angelfire site (yes, allowing users to have webpages on mine)

it's a work in progress, and isn't easy, but I love working on it.

If you are going to use IIS spend the time to look at all the security settings for the folders that you are using. IIS did a good job of setting up stupid default settings that got me hacked. I wasn't smart enough to take the time to investigate how everything was setup by default and some dumb scrip kiddies got a hold of me. Wasted about 3 hours of my time at work trying to clean up the mess.

Yes, I've heard some bad things about IIS and security issues. Should I just un-install and go with something like Apache & Serv-U?

I'd certainly recommend using Apache. IIS only gave me headaches; a few times everything (PHP, SSI) just stopped working all of a sudden and the only solution I found was reinstalling IIS. Also, IIS 5.0 is one big security hole, at least, if you believe a recent rapport that was released some time ago.

As for the site, well, you could put something on it that interests you. Since we've no idea what your hobbies or topics of interest are, I doubt anyone could come up with a good idea, except by pure luck :);)

Well, it appears IIS is more trouble than it's worth. I'll try Apache I suppose. Does anyone know of anything better than Serv-U for an FTP Server?

Also, I guess my original question is a tad bit unanswerable really. I guess then, for those of you that have websites, how did you come up with ideas for your pages? I have a variety of different interests, but I can't come up with anything that just "grabs" me, ya know?

A site I'm currently developing (www.tadi-project.com) was inspired by some of my main interests: physics and technology, plus some more.
I've also another site (www.emudreams.com), which is (surprise, surprise!) an emulator related page. Emulators are cool :D

So you see, you must let yourself get inspired by certain topics.

BTW will you promise us that you won't put up such an ugly flashing-text-with-stupid-background-which-makes-the-text-unreadable, overdose-of-flashing-and-seizures-causing-gif's, welcome-to-my-site kind of page? ;):p
