If i wanted to make a Bulletin Board site, similar to anandtech, for a local sports team how would i go about doing it?

I mean the basics, we'll get to the design of it later on. I know you need a server, but thats about all i know about the whole subject.

Edit

I know about registering the site name.

No that's not required you could do it like Adul and Rallispec do, through a web hosting provider (like I linked in step 2).

How much can you afford every month?

I wouldnt want to spend a lot in the beginning, until i got advertisers. I think i have a really good idea for this site. So maybe like 300 for the year.

i like the supersized package on the site you showed me, but i dont need 200 email addys

I run some forums here is what i use.

PHPBB Free forum with a descent amount of mods available to use. This forum runs on PHP and MYSQL.

This is the service i am currently using. I found them to be very reliable and fast. They have several different plan levels. I currently pay 25 a month for their free bsd hosting. They have cheaper plans which will probaly fit your traffic load better. Actually they even have some scripts to setup phpbb on thier servers automaticly so it is a fairly painless proccess 🙂

Any question feel free to ask

Hell I run my site outta my house on a 256kb connection, and not that many people bitch about it.. so it can be done.

what's wrong with phpbb?

And btw, I use mandrake and haven't had any problems for a while (hey, so what, i'm a beginner, cut me some slack)

i mean i have no clue what they stand for. talk about other things im ok, but website stuff.......eh im like a 90 year old buying a PC.

Errrrrrrrrr.

It's going to be easier if you go ahead and buy the domain and hosting then you can worry about setting up the forum software (that's what phpbb is).

Several forum members have their own forums and prefer to use phpbb

now i personally would make it a hobby keeping this site up, but if it gets to the point i have pictured in the back of my mind, is there a way to cover my costs with the site, or even make some side money?

Yes you could sell advertising, ad banners, sell merchandise and/or services, accept donations, offer premium paying member only services, etc.

But people have to be willing to pay for whatever you wanna sell.

you ever get an idea for something, and get so excited about it you wanna do a backflip? thats how i feel right now.

No. I just wanna run the best damn Hot Deals site the world has ever seen. I could do it but it'd require me quitting my job and being poor for over a year, so no I don't think I'll be doing that.

If you have a great idea, then go for it, what's stopping you?

whats stopping me is:

My mom....not a entrepreuner type

My website design and knowledge in this field, being very minimal.

Who cares about your mom, if you have your own $ I'd say it would take around $55 to register a domain and get 1 year of small site web hosting.

Forum software is free.

Do it.

If you buy a domain name and obtain hosting, I could install the bulletin board (and its prerequisites) for you. PM me if such a need ever arises.

i dont think you'll encounter any problems installing forum software yourself. maybe alittle help, but trust me, the documentation for installation of phpbb2 is easy to understand and complete.

you also might want to take a look at Invision Board. I've decided to go with that for my own personal forums. I felt it was just as easy to configure with the included installation guide and i prefer the default look of invision over phpbb2. just something to think about. 🙂

Invision Board looks kinda cool. Is it easier/harder to install than phpbb? Easier/harder to configure?

The downside to Invision Board is that it's not an open-source project, unlike phpBB (which is GPLed). That stunts development, IMHO.
