There is no close button on sub menus, they stay until you choose something else.
The main menu is too well hidden, you need to get your mouse too close to the top before it opens.

Sorry, but I dislike total flash sites.

I think your popup menu at the top should just be static links at the bottom. Mousing over them and then seeing popups would be fine I guess. Also I think the little black & white mountain doodle before the main pic is nice but I would like to see it for a bit longer. The "destination: Nepal" text would look better at the top or somewhere else outside the flash area and not directly on the pic. Also, if the "gear" links pop out like that, can the words still be right side up instead of sideways?

If I make the words right side up, then it makes the bars on the ends too fat.

The little mountain doodle that you see at the beginning is just a quick preloader that I did. As your movie gets closer to 100% the mountains get taller. The current movie is 150k, mostly due to the picture background. If I delete the pic out and have it load externally, then the movie will be down around 60K and most people would never see the little drawing preloader. In any case, I need to put a little box in there that gives the percentage.

I'm also debating just getting rid of the destination Nepal text all together.

I fixed it so that the menu bar is harder to autohide on the start. As long as the user doesnt have the mouse cursor over the flash window when the movie starts, the menu will show up before it autohides.

i wouldnt hide the menubar it at all. it looks nice at the top, when its viewable, and it doesnt ruin the pic at all.

when i first hit the site, all i saw was a picture, almost thought it was just a hosted .jpg file

the side button things are kinda weird though, i think id leave all navigation at the top. maybe change the top nav bar if needed (to add submenus), but I did think the picture scrolly thing looks ok.

If you click on the first two colored squares in the pic menu that pops up, you can see that the background changes. Thats how pictures will be viewed, which is why I want the top menu to disappear. I do seem to be getting a lot of opinions that people dont want the top menu to hide though. I'll have to consider it more.

for a website, intuitive navigation is key. having to "find" the navigation bar isnt a good idea imho

The current version just has it sitting there not getting hid anymore.

It would be a lot easier to figure out how things are supposed to work if you added placeholder text and graphics. "Gear and cost" for instance is very hard to grasp when there's nothing but the heading bars.

The circle to close (I think?) everything on gear and cost is confusing. I would rename that section to "equipment" or just "gear".

Clicking on a navigation item (such as "pictures") when the user is already on that item should take the user back to "home", or else you should make it no longer a link. Buttons that produce no effect whatsoever are confusing. Same goes for the headings in "gear and cost".

"Contact" should have a "submit" button or something, even if it's not hooked up yet.

I would use a lighter background color than brown.

As for doing everything in Flash: it doesn't appear to have led to any additional functionality, just chrome. If you just wanted to play with Flash, then whatever. But taking a bunch of stuff that could've easily been done in straight HTML, throwing it in Flash, and adding some animation is exactly the sort of thing that people hate about all-Flash websites.
