What are some good software titles for making a visually appealing and engaging website? I used to write html to a make a few simple websites but that was a decade ago and probably going the software route is a better option now-a-days.

Those who do this, what software do you use, and what are thoughts on it?

Microsoft Expression Web is awesome. Over a $100 cheaper than Dreamweaver. For $99 you can "upgrade" from any version of Frontpage to the latest version Expression Web. Which isn't really an upgrade, Expression Web is completely different while sharing a similar interface. The "upgrade" just lets you install and license Expression Web. And amazingly, Expression Web is standard compliant and fully supports CSS, asp.net and now even provided a .php server if you need to integrate .php.

I've used NetObject Fusion 7 and like it.

I got it free with a then-free 1&1 webhosting deal many years ago.
I just checked to see if netobjects is still active -- and they are up to version 11, but there's a free version on their site. I didn't download it - so don't how how complete it is.

I haven't seriously used anything else so can't make any useful comparisons.
I also haven't done anything complicated or flashy, so no idea if it would meet your needs.

webhostingtalk.com may be another good place to ask

+1

If you gave up on Frontpage many years ago (like most of us did) its worth checking out Expression Web again.

Worth noting - if you're a student you can get Expression Web (as well as a bunch of other software) free from Microsoft. Expression Web is included in the Expression Studio 2 suite.
