I think WebOS is a great system - my favorite mobile OS right now. The original Palm Pre had issues though - its battery life in particular was just terrible, among build quality problems (many of which were fixed with the Pre Plus), and it had just awful marketing, which did not help their chances. Not to mention its very outdated by now.

They have hinted about new hardware coming soon, if they can pair some truly solid hardware with WebOS 2.0, they'll have an awesome device on their hands.

I will throw my Moto Droid in the trash if a nice handset with Web 2.0 comes out, and I like Android...

I really like webos but it missed it's chance, it is dead and will not change

No offense, but this is silly. In the mobile world, there is absolutely no such concept as "too late." People buy new cell phones, and they do so frequently. People are upgrading their smartphones, people are upgrading from dumbphones to smartphones. Mobile tech improves rapidly. People said it was "too late" for Android because the iPhone was so entrenched. There were even those that said it was crazy for Apple to try to break into a market dominated by Microsoft, Blackberry, Nokia, and Palm.

If they make a product worth buying, and market it properly, people will buy it. Android needed Verizon's Droid marketing campaign to do it. Windows Phone 7 and WebOS 2.0 will need solid marketing on top of solid products too....but it certainly can happen.

Sure it can but I imagine it won't imo, more power to them though. More competition the better

I am loving my Pre Plus. I moved from an iPhone 3G to the Pre Plus. WebOS is so much better than iOS in my opinion. I just hope it catches on with developers so we can have more apps.

I have an EVO 4G, came form a palm pre. I just rooted and flashed CM6 labor day! It was a PIA, (newb) but I got it done with videos, tutorials, and a lot of trial and error.

THAT said, EVO 4G stock, I rather have my Pre. It was just that much more intuitive, and easier to manage things. The OS had me sold. But after rooting the damn thing, and flashing CM6, I couldn't understand why I didn't do it earlier, or be scared of it. Sure, I lost 4G, but it kills the battery anyways, and the 30 FPS made the phone feel like a snail... now, with it uncapped, WOW! the touch response is Insanely faster (though still trails behind all mighty apple) but everything scrolls faster, the responses for things opening is MUCH quicker. I like this aspect of it!

Anyways, if they had an awesome hardware for the palm pre, with 60fps+ UI, I'm sold. Goodbye EVO in a heartbeat.

They need better hardware and more devs. The OS looks interesting, but I would want it with at least a 3.5" screen, and either a better, or no hardware keyboard.

I still have an original Pre, non-plus edition. I had 3, the first 2 crapped out under warranty and the latest one i received under insurance, the build date is 6/10. This one seems more solid, but WebOS is in high need of better hardware. I overclock mine to 1ghz and its pretty damn snappy. IMO WebOS is the best and easiest mobile os, hopefully HP can back them where they fell with the original launch.

LOL Pre Plus. I had that slow POS with no working GPS for 1 day.

All other issues aside, WebOS is pretty damn useless on those Palm devices with dinky screens.

Yes, next, let's try to watch Hulu with a magnifying glass. Hurrah.

This

If they come out with a great WebOS device, I'm dumping everything and going with that. The bad part is though that with the market it is now, the device needs to be really good cus of how fast Android devices are getting upgraded.

The screens were smaller but it was a smaller device as a whole and they hid a lot of options that actually showed you more than the same webpage on something like the iPhone.

not all of us need to watch hulu on our phones. or netflix for that matter. or any video. I love the size of the pre.

With that said, yeah, a slightly larger screen would be nice to have. But i'm talking maybe a 3.5, 3.7" tops. I have no need for these 4"+ screen phones. I see the appeal, but I would like to see some high end... smaller screened phones as well. I used to hate the iphone size. I still do actually, but will gladly take it over an EVO sized device.

I had a Pre and really liked it but they have screwed the pooch by releasing junk hardware and not updating it. (no, the Plus does not count as an update) I moved on to Android and won't move back. I am to intrenched into the ecosystem at this point. I have spent way to much on apps that I use regularly to drop them at this point. I have a feeling I am not the only one that feels this way. As wishy washy as HP has been about WebOS and what they plan to do with it I am not holding my breath. Considering the first thing they release with WebOS on it is a printer I have to question their priorities with it.

That is not webOS on the printer, it is android. I would hardly call HP wishy washy on webOS. Every time they have discussed it in interviews they were firmly behind pushing the OS along with new devices. What is wishy washy about that? They have only owned Palm for a couple months, so I am not surprised that they haven't released a new phone yet. I am sure they want to make sure they roll out top notch hardware.

I don't really get the love for webOS. Playing with it in the store, yeah it's pretty cool, but not any cooler or more functional than android or ios. It certainly doesn't seem to be "I'm dropping everything for it" cool.

The unified inbox is nifty, but I keep my work email and private email segregated. Cards are fun, but I am accustomed to "closing" my tasks rather than keeping them open, even if it's just an illusion.

So, why the love?

the notification system is 10x better than either iOS/Android, IMO. But google snatched up the guy who made it when Palm was bought by HP, so we'll see what they end up with.

What's better about it? My wife has a Palm Pixi and, from the times I've messed with it, it seems a trade off: screen real estate for widgets and the like on android vs. more comprehensive info sitting at the bottom of the screen.

I haven't used it on a daily basis, so I do not know that much about it.

well, android does have that plus, the widgets. but from what I've seen of the notifications on android, i really don't like the pull down method, so probably personal preference.

but on the whole cards thing... day to day use, I love it for simple app switching. Not to mention gestures. Simple swipe back and forth feels more natural to me than hitting a button on the screen for some reason. I guess it takes away having to be precise to say, pull up the apps pages.

Oh, and the touchstone. Everyone needs to do this. I've been spoiled by it.
